Electrospinning Living Bacteria: A Review of Applications from Agriculture to Health Care

Jessica D. Schiffman et al.

Summary: Living bacteria can be encapsulated into flexible and modular electrospun polymer fabrics for various applications in biotechnology. The use of nanofiber scaffolds to deliver probiotics, as well as their potential in other areas such as wound bandages and energy-generating microbial fuel cells, is explored in this review. Electrospinning is an effective method for encapsulating living microorganisms, but further investigations are needed before commercialization.

Acute Otitis Media in Children-Challenges of Antibiotic Resistance in the Post-Vaccination Era

Cristina Gavrilovici et al.

Summary: Acute otitis media (AOM) remains a major reason for antibiotic use in children, despite the availability of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. A study conducted in a pediatric emergency hospital in Romania found that Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae were the most common bacteria associated with AOM. Alarmingly, a high proportion of the Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were resistant to multiple drugs. This highlights the importance of addressing antimicrobial resistance to minimize the negative impact on healthcare costs.

How alginate properties influence in situ internal gelation in crosslinked alginate microcapsules (CLAMs) formed by spray drying

Tina Jeoh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that alginate gel rapidly under ambient conditions through calcium mediated electrostatic crosslinks, forming protective matrices for sensitive bioactive cargo. The crosslinking in CLAMs plays a crucial role in determining its barrier properties and applications in food, cosmetics, and agriculture. The extent of gelation in spray dried CLAMs can be controlled by the molecular weights of the alginates at saturating calcium concentrations.
