Upper-plate controls on subduction zone geometry, hydration and earthquake behaviour

Adrien F. Arnulf et al.

Summary: The structures in the upper plate have a significant impact on the geometry, hydration state, and segmentation of large megathrust earthquakes at subduction zones. High forearc wavespeeds and dense, high-rigidity plutons play a crucial role in forcing the subduction of incoming plates. Reduced mantle velocities beneath the region of maximum curvature and faulting may indicate serpentinization of the subducting mantle. The study also highlights the occurrence of large earthquakes originating from the flanks of these plutons.

Decollement geometry controls on shallow very low frequency earthquakes

Yoshitaka Hashimoto et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found shallow very low frequency earthquakes (VLFE) in subduction zones. By analyzing the stress distribution along the shallow decollement in the Nankai Trough, researchers were able to create maps of slip tendency and dilation tendency. The study suggests that the decollement geometry plays a significant role in VLFE activity.

Evolution of the geological structure and mechanical properties due to the collision of multiple basement topographic highs in a forearc accretionary wedge: insights from numerical simulations

Ayumu Miyakawa et al.

Summary: This study proposes a conceptual geological model for the collision of multiple basement topographic highs (BTHs) with a forearc accretionary wedge. Numerical simulations show that each BTH collision can create distinct geological structures and variations in porosity that influence the distribution of pore pressure. The strong horizontal compressive stresses associated with BTH collisions can significantly impact the pore pressure within underthrust sediments.

Widespread Aseismic Slip Along the Makran Megathrust Triggered by the 2013 Mw 7.7 Balochistan Earthquake

Xiaoran Lv et al.

Summary: InSAR time series data analysis reveals up to 20 cm of radar line-of-sight displacements in the area of the 2013 Mw 7.7 Balochistan earthquake in southwest Pakistan. This surface displacement is caused by a 5,500-km(2)-wide subhorizontal patch of the megathrust fault exhibiting about 80 cm of aseismic slip. The triggered aseismic slip suggests that this section of the megathrust is decoupled, and the seismic potential of the subduction zone is fully locked up to a distance of 220 km from the trench.

Fluid transport and storage in the Cascadia forearc influenced by overriding plate lithology

Gary D. Egbert et al.

Summary: Subduction of hydrated oceanic lithosphere plays an important role in the distribution of fluids in the forearc of subduction zones. The lithology of the overriding plate plays a critical role in controlling fluid transport, with metasedimentary units accumulating fluids and mafic rocks remaining dry. The study demonstrates the significance of understanding the impact of lithology on fluid behavior in subduction zones using magnetotelluric imaging.

Direct constraints on in situ stress state from deep drilling into the Nankai subduction zone, Japan

Harold J. Tobin et al.

Summary: This study successfully constrained the in situ pore pressure and stress state in the deep interior of an accretionary wedge using data from drilling in the Nankai subduction zone. The estimated stress components helped reveal the tectonic stress characteristics in the region, indicating a normal or strike-slip faulting regime with low stress variations.

D acute accent ecollement strength and mechanical segmentation along the frontal wedge of the Hikurangi convergent margin (New Zealand): Insights from critical taper analysis

Cornelius O. Schwarze et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanics of outer forearcs, influenced by the frictional properties of the plate interface, is crucial for studying natural hazards like earthquakes and slumping. Previous research suggests that the Hikurangi margin offshore New Zealand exhibits variable mechanics along its length. However, the relationship between the morphology of the submarine margin and the plate boundary's effective decollement strength is not fully understood. Using gridded data of surface slope and plate dip, this study characterizes the central and northern Hikurangi margin and reveals significant regional variability in the effective decollement strength of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary.

Earthquake ruptures and topography of the Chilean margin controlled by plate interface deformation

Nadaya Cubas et al.

Summary: The control of location and segmentation of mega-earthquakes in subduction zones is a long-standing problem in Earth sciences. In this study, the researchers investigated the relationship between plate interface deformation and the strongly and weakly coupled patches revealed by interplate coupling models. They found that extensive deformation occurs along most of the Chilean subduction zone, with basal erosion mainly occurring at 15 km depth and underplating at 35 +/- 10 and 60 +/- 5 km depth. They also observed that the distribution of deformation is related to sediment input and basal erosion. The researchers propose that long-lived plate interface deformation promotes stress build-up and leads to earthquake nucleation, while segments with heterogeneously distributed deformation act as barriers to earthquake propagation.

Direct constraints on in situ stress state from deep drilling into the Nankai subduction zone, Japan

Summary: This study utilized drilling experiments in the Nankai subduction zone to constrain the in situ pore pressure and stress state within an accretionary wedge for the first time. The findings revealed a linear gradient in minimum horizontal principal stress and suggested a normal or strike-slip faulting regime. These results provide important data support for further research.

Widths of imbricate thrust blocks and the strength of the front of accretionary wedges and fold-and-thrust belts

Garrett Ito et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural features of accretionary wedges and fold-and-thrust belts, focusing on the width of crustal blocks bounded by major thrusts. Through numerical models and analytical solutions, it is found that the initial width of a thrust block is determined at the front of the wedge and subsequently decreases with certain factors. The findings provide insights into the factors influencing block width and propose a scaling law to explain these influences.

Slip rate deficit and earthquake potential on shallow megathrusts

Eric O. Lindsey et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method to infer the slip rate deficit of offshore megathrusts, providing better understanding of seismic slip behavior. It reveals that the shallow fault generally has a slip rate deficit between 80% and 100% of the plate convergence rate when locked patches are present. This finding suggests a potentially higher global tsunami hazard than currently recognized.

Physical conditions and frictional properties in the source region of a slow-slip event

Adrien F. Arnulf et al.

Summary: Seismic imaging and data-constrained modelling reveal lateral variability in elastic properties and pore pressure, as well as near-velocity-neutral frictional properties in a shallow slow-slip source region along the Hikurangi subduction margin. The study suggests that fluid flow along thrust faults plays a crucial role in influencing mechanical properties and frictional stability along the subduction fault. This research also indicates that shallow subduction fault rocks must exhibit nearly velocity-neutral properties to generate shallow frictional slow slip events.
