Cracking Analysis of a Brass Clamp Mounted on the Main Transformer in the Power Grid System

Jiahui Chen et al.

Summary: Cracking of conductive brass accessories in substations can result in overheating or an open circuit, causing serious impact on the safe and stable operation of the power grid system. This paper analyzed the cracking of a brass clamp that had been in service for seven years on the main transformer. The fracture morphology, chemical composition, and metallographic structure were systematically analyzed, and stress conditions were obtained through finite element simulation. The clamp exhibited transgranular brittle fracture with high oxygen content in the fracture, involving crack propagation along Pb particle connecting pathways, and stress concentration at the crack position. It was concluded that the failure was due to stress corrosion cracking and excessive content of Pb. Suggestions were proposed to prevent malfunction of the main transformer caused by clamp cracks.

Atmospheric corrosion of T2 copper and H62 brass exposed in an urban environment

Xuankai Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the corrosion behavior and mechanism of H62 brass and T2 copper in an urban atmosphere were investigated. Copper mainly forms Cu2O and CuO as corrosion products, with the presence of a small amount of Cu2Cl(OH)3. Brass shows additional Zn-containing compounds, such as ZnCl, ZnO, and ZnS, in its corrosion product. The corrosion rate of brass decreases with time, while that of copper initially increases and then decreases after 12 months. Brass exhibits better corrosion resistance than copper in the urban atmosphere. The results of this study provide scientific data support for material selection and life prediction of equipment used in urban environments.

Effect of Ca and Sb on the Corrosion Resistance of E690 Steel in Marine Atmosphere Environment

Jianbo Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of Ca and Sb elements on the corrosion resistance of E690 steel in a simulated marine environment. Results showed that the addition of Ca and Sb elements effectively enhances the corrosion resistance of E690 steel in the simulated marine environment. These findings suggest that the addition of Ca and Sb elements can improve the corrosion resistance of E690 steel in simulated marine environments and have potential for use in marine engineering applications.

Corrosion Behavior of Copper Exposed in Marine Tropical Atmosphere in Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Chile 20 Years after MICAT

Rosa Vera et al.

Summary: This study reported on the atmospheric corrosion of copper on a tropical island in the South-Central Pacific Ocean and compared it with a similar study conducted 20 years earlier. The results showed that the corrosion of copper has increased slightly over time, despite the increase in contaminants associated with population growth and tourism on the island.

Influence of Air Pollution Factors on Corrosion of Metal Equipment in Transmission and Transformation Power Stations

Xiufang Chen et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the atmospheric environmental corrosion grade of substations in 11 prefecture level cities in Shanxi Province through a metal hanging sheet experiment. It analyzes the influence of various factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, and the concentration of main pollution factors, such as SO2, Cl-, dust, on the corrosion of transmission and transformation equipment, and proposes corresponding anti-corrosion measures.

Atmospheric corrosion of tin coatings on H62 brass and T2 copper in an urban environment

Xuankai Wang et al.

Summary: By comparing the microstructure and atmospheric corrosion of tin coatings on H62 brass and T2 copper, it was found that the tin coating on brass had more inclusions and higher local corrosion sensitivity. The local corrosion sensitivity and R value of the tin coatings on both copper and brass were higher on the skyward surface than on the earthward surface. The preferential corrosion of (101) oriented crystal particles was the main reason for the higher corrosion sensitivity of the tin coatings, and preferential wetting, suspended particles, and rainwater scouring also influenced the corrosion process of the tin coating.
