Precipitation is the main axis of tropical plant phylogenetic turnover across space and time

Summary: Early natural historians established environment and geography as key factors in determining the distribution of organisms, but the relative importance of these factors remains unresolved. By studying a plant clade across different continents, we found that the availability of water from deserts to rainforests dictates the turnover of lineages within continents. We also discovered that speciation occurs mostly within specific precipitation niches and that lineage turnover coincides with isohyets of precipitation, suggesting universal processes in evolution and dispersal.
