Sequential occurrence and development of three tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal in 2013

Abhishek Kumar et al.

Summary: The Bay of Bengal experienced three strong tropical cyclones in November-December 2013, named Helen, Lehar, and Madi. These cyclones passed over the same region, with Lehar forming immediately after Helen dissipated and Madi occurring eight days after Lehar made landfall. This study investigates the genesis, progression, and subsequent occurrences of these cyclones. Higher SST, weak El-Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), positive episodes of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and strong MJO activity were found to be the factors contributing to the sequential development of these cyclones.

Cyclone Yaas: A Curse to Coastal People of Odisha and West Bengal (India)

Soumen Chatterjee et al.

Summary: The article discusses the intensification of cyclonic storm Yaas from a Depression to a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and its impact on the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal. Through analyzing the Sentinel-1 SAR dataset in the Google Earth Engine environment, it is found that around 1593.06 km(2) of coastal land has been flooded due to intense rainfall and storm surges. This paper sheds light on the significant damage caused by cyclonic storms like Yaas and the subsequent challenges faced by the coastal communities.

A scientific basis for fish mass mortality and jellyfish beach stranding in relation to cyclone yaas

Sanjiba Kumar Baliarsingh et al.

Summary: Before tropical cyclone Yaas made landfall, fish mass mortality and jellyfish beach stranding were observed in the nearshore waters of Puri, a popular tourist destination in eastern India. The rise in water temperature was identified as a possible cause for fish mortality, while the removal of fish from the ecosystem created a competitive advantage for jellyfish, leading to their aggregation and beach stranding.

Summary: This study evaluates the formation processes and diversity of coral reef species in the Seixas coral reef in northeastern Brazil. Results indicate that the Seixas Reef is a recent coral-algal carbonate formation associated with coastal evolution and sea-level rise. The diversity of benthic organisms settled on a consolidated arenite base and underwent continuous succession processes. Overall, this coral reef is highly vulnerable due to its formation material and exhibits high diversity in certain subsectors.

Summary: Mangroves, coastal vegetation with high ecological and economic value, have been protected and sustainably used in recent years. Analysis of satellite data reveals that Asian mangroves have the highest health conditions, while African mangroves have the lowest. The global mangrove area is increasing, positively correlated with precipitation and temperature, but inhibited by sea surface salinity. However, mangroves still face threats from salinity stress, natural disasters, and human activities.

Long-term impacts of tropical cyclones and fluvial floods on economic growth-Empirical evidence on transmission channels at different levels of development

H. Krichene et al.

Summary: The study shows that severe tropical cyclones and fluvial floods can lead to long-term economic output growth losses, with the losses increasing non-linearly with disaster intensity. Higher development levels in countries may prevent economic growth losses from fluvial floods but not tropical cyclones. Additionally, rising household consumption and government expenditure are main channels for mitigating growth losses, while increasing investment amplifies growth losses over the period 1971-2010.
