Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-based metabolomics for the discrimination of Keemun black teas coupled with chemometrics

Yin-feng Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, a Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) and chemometric-based metabolomics approach was developed to determine the geographic origins of Keemun black tea. SERS peaks enhanced by Ag nanoparticles were selected and intensities were calculated for chemometric analysis. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) achieved an average discrimination accuracy of 86.3% and cross-validation of 84.3%, while three machine learning algorithms, feedforward neural network (FNN), random forest (RF), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), achieved recognition rates of 93.5%, 93.5%, and 87.1% respectively. This study demonstrates the potential of using SERS technique coupled with AgNPs and chemometrics as a reliable, fast, and convenient method for determining the geographic origins of teas.

Three-Dimensional Plasmonic Nanocluster-Driven Light-Matter Interaction for Photoluminescence Enhancement and Picomolar-Level Biosensing

Won-Geun Kim et al.

Summary: Plasmonic nanoparticle clusters offer unique electromagnetic responses at optical frequencies and can be used for nanophotonic applications. This study presents a novel strategy for fabricating three-dimensional nanoparticle clusters with efficient coupling between gold nanoparticles and other nanomaterials. Quantum dots embedded in the clusters exhibit a blue shift in emission spectrum. In addition, an ultracompact diagnostic platform is demonstrated for detecting viruses and mutations.

Fused Raman spectroscopic analysis of blood and saliva delivers high accuracy for head and neck cancer diagnostics

Hanna J. Koster et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy shows great promise for liquid biopsy cancer detection and diagnosis as it is rapid, label-free, non-destructive, and requires little to no sample preparation. By fusing the Raman spectra of plasma and saliva, higher diagnostic performance can be achieved, demonstrating the ability of Raman spectroscopy to provide additive value across different biofluid sources.

Recent progress of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for subcellular compartment analysis

Yanting Shen et al.

Summary: Organelles play crucial roles in cell activities and are closely associated with apoptosis, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. Understanding subcellular structures and their abnormal conditions can lead to insights on pathological mechanisms for early diagnosis and effective therapy. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been shown to be a powerful tool in studying subcellular compartments with molecular specificity and high sensitivity, meeting the demands of cellular investigations.
