Increase in Leidenfrost point via plasma-activated water

Mary Low et al.

Summary: Plasma-activated water is used to increase the Leidenfrost point for spray cooling. The presence of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in plasma-activated water leads to an increase in solution density and a reduction in surface tension, resulting in a significant increase in evaporation rate. Plasma-activated water droplets can effectively lower the surface temperature of a heated plate and have potential applications in practical cooling systems.

Computational modelling of Leidenfrost drops

Indrajit Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study utilizes a computational model to simulate the Leidenfrost effect and investigates the characteristics of droplet levitation and vapor flow under different parameters. By comparing with experimental results, the validity of the theoretical model is confirmed, and possible explanations for the discrepancies between experiments and the model are provided. The research also reveals the features of the droplet's bottom surface and the influence of droplet size on the thickness of the vapor layer, as well as predictions on the vapor chimney instability for large droplets.

Graphene-mediated suppression of Leidenfrost effect for droplets on an inclined surface

Edmund Lim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the suppression of the Leidenfrost effect for a droplet rolling on an inclined surface coated with graphene. The graphene coating enables vapor to escape through the nanostructure, obstructing the formation of a continuous vapor layer. The experiment observes three interesting regimes of contact boiling, intermittent contact boiling, and transient contact boiling when the droplet rolls onto the graphene-coated surface. Overall, there is a maximum temperature reduction of 64 degrees C on the heated surface with the graphene coating.

Influence of the substrate permeability on Leidenfrost temperature

Datta Prasad et al.

Summary: The Leidenfrost state of droplets can compromise heat dissipation in cooling applications, as a thin insulating vapor layer forms over which the coolant droplet levitates. The Leidenfrost temperature of a deionized water droplet was found to depend on surface morphology, with an increase in LFT observed with the height of micropillars and spacing between them. A pressure-based model was proposed to explain the droplet dynamics, demonstrating the crucial role of excess vapor gap in sustaining transition boiling and affecting droplet evaporation rate in the Leidenfrost state.
