A Bayesian Analysis of Physical Parameters for 783 Kepler Close Binaries: Extreme-mass-ratio Systems and a New Mass Ratio versus Period Lower Limit

Henry A. Kobulnicky et al.

Summary: Contact binary star systems represent a crucial phase in binary evolution, providing insights into the evolutionary pathways and end products of binary stars. Analysis of light curves and spectroscopic data reveals extreme mass ratios in contact systems as well as an empirical lower limit for mass ratios below which contact systems are rare.

Photometric Analysis of Three Potential Red Nova Progenitors

Surjit S. Wadhwa et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted photometric analysis of three bright red nova progenitor contact binary systems. The results showed that these systems have low mass ratios and separations below theoretical values, and exhibit high chromospheric activity and X-ray luminosity. Based on these findings, it is likely that all three systems are unstable and could potentially merge.

Simplified method for the identification of low mass ratio contact binary systems that are potential red nova progenitors

Surjit S. Wadhwa et al.

Summary: This study presents a simplified method to identify potential bright red nova progenitors based on the amplitude of the light curve and infrared (J-H) colour of a contact binary system. By analyzing photometric data, physical characteristics indicating potential orbital instability are determined.
