Jiashen Song et al.

Summary: The combination of straw interlayer and irrigation water reduction can improve soil fertility and bacterial community while reducing water consumption in the Hetao irrigated area of China. This method is crucial for sustainable agricultural development under limited irrigation water supply.

Insights into the associations between soil quality and ecosystem multifunctionality driven by fertilization management: A case study from the North China Plain

Rong Jia et al.

Summary: The recycling of livestock manure has been shown to enhance soil quality and ecosystem multifunctionality, particularly in promoting C and P cycling. There is a positive correlation between soil quality index and ecosystem multifunctionality, while mineral fertilization did not have a significant effect on soil quality and enzyme activity.

Green Manure Amendment in Paddies Improves Soil Carbon Sequestration but Cannot Substitute the Critical Role of N Fertilizer in Rice Production

Pengfu Hou et al.

Summary: This study found that green manure amendment plays a crucial role in enhancing carbon sequestration without increasing methane emissions, but it may reduce the carbon management index. Additionally, fertilization does not significantly affect methane emissions but can greatly increase grain yield.

Mixed planting reduces the shaping ability of legume cover crop on soil microbial community structure

Ting Che et al.

Summary: Cover crop species and planting patterns have impacts on soil properties, plant properties, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Mixed planting of cover crops can increase biomass and nutrient uptake, and improve soil properties. Cover crop planting significantly increases soil organic matter content, nitrogen levels, and available phosphate and potassium levels.

Global patterns and abiotic drivers of ecosystem multifunctionality in dominant natural ecosystems

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: The patterns and processes of ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) across global ecosystems are largely unknown. This study compiled a global dataset and identified a critical global pattern of hump-shaped EMF relationship with mean annual precipitation. It was found that climatic and soil factors jointly drive EMF in low precipitation areas, while climatic factors dominate EMF in high precipitation regions. However, the key driver of EMF differs substantially across dominant ecosystems and precipitation regions.

Intercropping-driven nitrogen trade-off enhances maize productivity in a long-term experiment

Yizhe Wang et al.

Summary: Intercropping can improve land productivity and achieve sustainable agriculture by exploiting species complementarities. This study explored the effects of intercropping maize with different plants on maize productivity and nitrogen trade-off, and found that intercropping significantly increased maize yield and nitrogen use efficiency, while reducing nitrogen losses through ammonia volatilization and runoff.

Soil aggregate size-dependent relationships between microbial functional diversity and multifunctionality

Shun Han et al.

Summary: Soil stability and aggregates are crucial for soil fertility and microbial diversity, affecting ecosystem functions and services. This study found that soil aggregates play a key role in driving microbial functional gene diversity and ecosystem functions, with organic fertilizer enhancing the relationship between gene diversity and multifunctionality, while inorganic fertilizer reduces it. The findings also suggest that differences in resource availability within soil aggregates influence ecosystem functions, highlighting the importance of soil aggregation for regulating soil nutrition and microbial diversity.

The three major axes of terrestrial ecosystem function

Mirco Migliavacca et al.

Summary: The leaf economics spectrum and the global spectrum of plant forms and functions revealed fundamental axes of variation in plant traits, representing different ecological strategies shaped by the evolutionary development of plant species. Ecosystem functions depend on environmental conditions and the traits of species within ecological communities. However, the axes of variation of ecosystem functions are largely unknown, limiting our understanding of ecosystem responses to anthropogenic drivers and environmental changes.

Climate and plants regulate the spatial variation in soil multifunctionality across a climatic gradient

Jingyi Ding et al.

Summary: The study reveals that increasing aridity leads to higher spatial variation in soil multifunctionality, but overall multifunctionality remains stable. Different vegetation patch types respond differently to aridity, with climate, soil factors, and variation in plant size being key drivers of soil multifunctionality. The study provides empirical evidence of the regulation of nutrient cycling and soil stability to maintain an average level of soil multifunctionality across a climatic gradient, and highlights the potential increase in spatial variation in soil multifunctionality and the importance of biocrusts in stabilizing soils under drier global climates.

Determining the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the ecosystem multifunctionality in a desert-oasis ecotone

Hengfang Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted at the Ebinur Lake Wetland Nature Reserve in Xinjiang, China, investigated the relationship between ecosystem multifunctionality, nutrient cycling, and community vertical structures. Results showed that diversity attributes and environmental factors play significant roles in influencing ecosystem multifunctionality and nutrient cycling. Moreover, biotic and abiotic factors were found to explain ecosystem multifunctionality better than nutrient cycling, highlighting the importance of assessing community diversity for preventing desertification in drylands.
