Relations between physical and ecosystem service flows of freshwater are critical for water resource security in large dryland river basin

Siqi Sun et al.

Summary: Freshwater ecosystem services are essential for freshwater safety, especially in dryland regions. However, most research focuses on static situations, neglecting flow conditions. This study establishes a modeling framework to analyze water security patterns based on physical flow and ecosystem service flow. The results for the Yellow River Basin show a decrease in water-scarce areas over the past two decades. The physical flow of freshwater relieves water stress in these areas by an average of 52.1% per year, mainly addressing water supply issues. The importance of flow from upstream to downstream is critical for long-term regional freshwater resource security.

A global transition to flash droughts under climate change

Xing Yuan et al.

Summary: Flash droughts have become increasingly common worldwide, posing challenges to drought monitoring and prediction. The intensification of droughts has accelerated over subseasonal time scales, leading to a transition towards more flash droughts in 74% of global regions over the past 64 years. This transition is linked to amplified anomalies in evapotranspiration and precipitation deficit due to human-induced climate change. In the future, this transition is expected to expand to most land areas, with greater increases under higher-emission scenarios. These findings highlight the urgency of adapting to faster-onset droughts in a warmer future.

Micropollutants but high risks: Human multiple stressors increase risks of freshwater ecosystems at the megacity-scale

Miao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ecological risks of micropollutants in the surface water of Beijing, China and reveals the influences of human and natural stressors on these risks. The study finds that micropollutant concentrations in the southern areas of Beijing are higher than those in the northern areas, and different land use patterns contribute to differences in pollution and risks. Additionally, climate conditions and human land use are important drivers in explaining the risks of micropollutants to various trophic levels of species.

Identification of ecosystem services supply and demand and driving factors in Taihu Lake Basin

Jinghui Li

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the multiple factors affecting ecosystem services supply and demand balance is essential for effective ecosystem management and policy making. In this study, the supply-demand balance of four types of ecosystem services in Taihu Lake Basin, China was analyzed using models and mapping techniques. The results showed spatial heterogeneity and imbalance in the supply and demand of ecosystem services, with the greatest imbalances in urban areas. Multiple factors, such as vegetation index, elevation, precipitation, and human disturbance, were found to influence ecosystem service balance. Recommendations were made for watershed management, including increasing the number of small-scale community parks in urban centers and expanding green spaces in suburban areas.

A wavelet coherence approach to detecting ecosystem services trade-off response to land use change

Xueyan Cheng et al.

Summary: Clarifying the complex land use impacts on ecosystem services trade-off is important for watershed sustainable development. This study used spatial continuous wavelet transform and wavelet coherence analysis to explore the trade-off between grain production and water purification in the Dongting Lake Basin. The results showed that the trade-off intensity had alleviated compared to 2005, with the strongest trade-off in farmland and forest land. Land use conflicts and intensity influenced the trade-off, with different impacts depending on the specific types of land use conversions.
