Cellulose Fiber Rejects as Raw Material for Integrated Production of Pleurotus spp. Mushrooms and Activated Biochar for Removal of Emerging Pollutants from Aqueous Media

Alejandro Grimm et al.

Summary: Cellulose fiber rejects from waste paper recycling were treated and used as substrates for mushroom cultivation. The pH of the substrates was adjusted using acetic acid and acid whey. Activated biochars were produced from the spent substrates and showed good adsorption properties for pollutants in water. The fiber reject-based substrates produced comparable mushroom growth and had low levels of toxic heavy metals.

Enhanced performance of activated carbon-based supercapacitor derived from waste soybean oil with coffee ground additives

Rita Kumari et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis and fabrication of an electrochemical electrode using waste soybean oil and waste coffee ground, which provides enhanced supercapacitive characteristics. Two different methods, ultrasonication mixing and hydrothermal treatment, are demonstrated to lead to different properties and performance in supercapacitors. The sample prepared using ultrasonication mixing shows a twofold increase in the highest specific capacitance, has a higher surface area, and exhibits good device stability after cycling.

High-surface-area activated carbon from pine cones for semi-industrial spray deposition of supercapacitor electrodes

Andreas Nordenstrom et al.

Summary: Pine cones can be used to prepare activated carbons with a high surface area exceeding 3000 m^2 g^(-1). The activated carbon derived from pine cones has similar properties to reduced graphene oxide. Pine cone derived activated carbon can be used in the spray deposition of electrodes.

Adsorption of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and paracetamol onto activated carbon prepared from effluent treatment plant sludge of the beverage industry

Angelica F. M. Streit et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sludge-derived activated carbons for pharmaceuticals adsorption in aqueous media. The ABSAC showed superior adsorption efficiency compared to BSAC, with higher surface area and total pore volume. The adsorbent proved to be highly efficient in removing pharmaceutical compounds in a simulated drug effluent, making it a promising candidate for treating pharmaceutical contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Spray Deposition of Supercapacitor Electrodes using Environmentally Friendly Aqueous Activated Graphene and Activated Carbon Dispersions for Industrial Implementation

Nicolas Boulanger et al.

Summary: The study utilized a spray gun machine to deposit high-surface-area supercapacitor electrodes using nanostructured carbon materials, showing that activated graphene outperformed activated carbon in performance. The environmentally friendly dispersion formulation based on water solvent and non-toxic additives contributed to the success of the electrodes.

Fate of active pharmaceutical ingredients in a northern high-rate algal pond fed with municipal wastewater

Richard H. Lindberg et al.

Summary: Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are important for human health, but can pose ecological risks if discharged into the environment. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove APIs specifically. Microalgae-based treatment is a sustainable and low-cost approach to remove nutrients and emerging contaminants.

Preparation of activated carbon from the residues of the mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) production chain for the adsorption of the 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic herbicide

Joseane S. Lazarotto et al.

Summary: Activated carbon developed from edible mushroom residues shows great potential as an alternative adsorbent for treating effluents containing 2,4-D herbicide. The adsorbent displayed strong adsorption capacity with Langmuir Q(max) value of 241.7 mg g(-1) at 298 K, achieving equilibrium in 30 minutes.

High-performance removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid herbicide in water using activated carbon derived from Queen palm fruit endocarp (Syagrus romanzoffiana)

Yamil L. de O. Salomon et al.

Summary: The activated carbon prepared from queen palm endocarp showed a high adsorptive performance for the herbicide 2,4-D. It exhibited a high specific surface area and pore volume, influencing the adsorption process significantly. The thermodynamic study indicated that the operation was spontaneous and involved an endothermic process.
