Grain size effects on high cycle fatigue behaviors of pure aluminum

B. B. Wang et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing (FSP) was used to prepare coarse-grained (CG), fine-grained (FG), and ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials to investigate the effect of grain size on high cycle fatigue properties. A linear relationship similar to the Hall-Petch relationship was observed between fatigue strength and grain size. The excellent grain boundaries stability in FSP UFG material inhibited the formation of large-scale shear bands and grain growth, resulting in higher fatigue strength exponent and fatigue damage resistance. Increasing the fraction of high angle grain boundaries can significantly improve the fatigue strength compared to other UFG materials.

Summary: In this study, ductile refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) were successfully fabricated by laser melting deposition for the first time. The addition of Nb element stabilized the body-centered cubic phase and suppressed the formation of the omega phase, resulting in improved mechanical properties. The TiZrHfNb alloy exhibited high tensile yield strength and ductility at room temperature.

Designing CoCrFeNi-M (M = Nb, Ta, Zr, and Hf) eutectic high-entropy alloys via a modified simple mixture method

Wenna Jiao et al.

Summary: Recently, a modified simple mixture method was proposed to design eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs) containing more than five elements. Four novel six-element and seven-element EHEAs were designed and prepared, demonstrating the validity and accuracy of this method. The two seven-element EHEAs exhibited peak strengths of 592 and 660 MPa at 1073 K, surpassing most reported EHEAs and even some refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs). This study provides a significant paradigm for designing EHEAs with more than five elements.

Microstructure and properties of a novel cost-effective FeNi-based eutectic high entropy alloys

Dong Fang et al.

Summary: Eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs) have excellent casting properties, high fracture strength, and high tensile ductility. This study investigated the alloying effect of Nb on microstructure and compression properties by fabricating and evaluating a series of [FeNi]75-xCr15Mn10Nbx Co-free high entropy alloys. With the addition of Nb, the microstructure changed from monophase to divorced eutectic to hypoeutectic to almost eutectic, and then transformed into hypereutectic. The compressive fracture strength of the alloys first increased and then decreased with the addition of Nb.

Design of synergistic alloying CoCrFeNi eutectic high entropy alloy based on infinite solid solution

Xicong Ye et al.

Summary: Multivariate synergistic alloying is an effective approach to enhance the overall mechanical properties of metallic materials. Eutectic high-entropy alloys with heterogeneous biphasic layered structures at the micro and nano scale exhibit excellent properties. However, most current studies on CoCrFeNi eutectic high-entropy alloys focus on unitary alloying. In this work, a design strategy based on infinite solid solution synergistic alloying is proposed for CoCrFeNi eutectic high-entropy alloys, leading to the successful design of eutectic high-entropy alloys with fine and regular micro-structures, some of which possess exceptional comprehensive mechanical properties.

High deformation ability induced by phase transformation through adjusting Cr content in Co-Fe-Ni-Cr high entropy alloys

Xuefeng Gao et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant changes in phase transformation and mechanical properties of high entropy alloys as the chromium content increases. With the increase of chromium content, the volume fractions of HCP and sigma phases increase, leading to an increase in yield strength, but the increase in sigma phase reduces the ductility of the material.

Unique strength-ductility balance of AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy with ultra-fine duplex microstructure prepared by selective laser melting

Yinuo Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, the selective laser melting (SLM) technique was used to prepare AlCoCrFeNi2.1 EHEA, achieving a good balance between strength and ductility. The SLM-ed samples exhibited a complete eutectic microstructure consisting of ultra-fine FCC and ordered B2 phases. The eutectic morphology transformed from lamellar structure to cellular structure as the laser energy input decreased. The SLM-ed AlCoCrFeNi2.1 EHEA demonstrated excellent mechanical properties, including high tensile strength, yield strength, and good ductility, which can be attributed to the ultra-fine grains and heterogeneous structure.

Microstructure formation mechanism and corrosion behavior of FeCrCuTiV two-phase high entropy alloy prepared by different processes

Summary: The microstructure and corrosion resistance of FeCrCuTiV high entropy alloy were studied, with results showing that the laser melting deposition process reduces grain size and volume fraction of Cu-rich phase. The higher cooling rate of laser melting deposition contributes to limited grain growth and decreased Cu-rich phase volume fraction. FeCrCuTiV high entropy alloy prepared by laser melting deposition exhibits better corrosion resistance in salt solution electrochemical corrosion test due to reduced Cu-rich phase.

Relation Between Strength and Hardness of High-Entropy Alloys

Xiaojuan Fan et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are alloys composed of multiple principal elements, with promising potentials for developing new compositions and remarkable mechanical properties. The relation between strength and hardness is important for predicting material strength from hardness testing. The study showed that for most HEAs, hardness equals to three times the strength, but for brittle HEAs, the relation may not hold due to early fracture.
