Comprehensive characterization of propylene carbonate based liquid electrolyte mixtures for sodium-ion cells

Andreas Hofmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of binary electrolyte systems based on propylene carbonate and various carbonates, with 1 M sodium perchlorate (NaClO4), in terms of their electrochemical properties, physicochemical properties, and compatibility with sodium metal. The study reveals the crucial role of NaClO4 in electrolyte decomposition and gas formation, as well as the formation of coupling products in mixtures of linear and cyclic carbonates during storage with sodium metal. Gas analysis also shows the formation of CO and propylene oxide during storage with NaClO4 present. Overall, the electrolyte PC+EC+NaClO4 is identified as the most favorable system with regards to decomposition characteristics and acceptable physicochemical and electrochemical properties. However, glyme-based mixtures and sulfolane raise high toxic concerns.

Strategies for Mitigating Dissolution of Solid Electrolyte Interphases in Sodium-Ion Batteries

Le Anh Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of electrolyte chemistry on the dissolution of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in sodium-ion batteries, using beta-alumina as a sodium-conductive membrane to prevent crosstalk. The research found that the solubility of SEI species in the electrolyte can reach up to 30% after a 50-hour pause, and saturation of the electrolyte with these SEI species can counteract aging due to SEI dissolution.

Comparing the Lithiation and Sodiation of a Hard Carbon Anode Using In Situ Impedance Spectroscopy

Fabian Linsenmann et al.

Summary: In this study, in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data measured during (de)sodiation and (de)lithiation of a commercial hard carbon anode material was presented. The results show that the charge transfer resistance associated with sodiation of HC is 10-fold higher compared to the lithiation of HC at 100% state-of-charge, leading to considerably reduced rate capability for HC sodiation. These findings suggest that fast-charging properties would be a crucial performance indicator for potential future commercialization of sodium-ion batteries.
