A large-scale field experiment on occupational gender segregation and hiring discrimination

Mladen Adamovic et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the relationship between occupational gender composition and gender discrimination in recruitment. It investigates whether there is hiring discrimination against men in female-dominated occupations. Through a large-scale field experiment in Australia, the researchers submitted more than 12,000 job applications for 12 occupations, varying the gender of the applicants. The findings show that men received around 50% more callbacks than women in male-dominated occupations, while they received over 40% fewer callbacks in female-dominated occupations.

Varying degrees of boundarylessness? The careers of self-employed and directly employed ICT professionals in the UK and Germany

Patricia Kinsella et al.

Summary: Despite growing interest in the influence of social and institutional settings on career trajectories, there is limited research on the comparative differences in boundaryless careers. Based on qualitative interviews with ICT professionals in the UK and Germany, the study finds that there is little evidence of active engagement with boundaryless careers among ICT professionals, despite working in a sector where it would be expected. The findings also highlight cross-national differences, with directly employed ICT professionals in Germany being more concerned about job insecurity compared to their UK counterparts.

Sustaining a career in general practice: Embodied work, inequality regimes, and turnover intentions of women working in general practice

Susan Mayson et al.

Summary: The medical workforce in Australia is becoming more female-dominated, with general practice being a popular choice for female doctors seeking work flexibility. However, there is evidence of increased turnover among female GPs, particularly younger ones. Interviews with 26 Australian female GPs reveal how the gendered nature of GP work and organizational processes contribute to inequality and turnover intentions. While some female GPs adapt to gender constraints to craft a sustainable career, others struggle to do so.

Age and entrepreneurial career success: A review and a meta-analysis

Hao Zhao et al.

Summary: Age has a weak, positive linear relationship with overall entrepreneurial success, with signs of a U-shaped relationship showing a negative effect among younger samples but a positive effect among older samples. The positive effect size is enhanced when more females are included in the sample. Additionally, older entrepreneurs tend to have larger businesses, and age has different effects on various success measures, indicating the need for further research to understand the nuanced impact of age on entrepreneurial success.

Whether, How, and Why Networks Influence Men's and Women's Career Success: Review and Research Agenda

Meredith L. Woehler et al.

Summary: This study examines the challenges women face in building and benefiting from networks to achieve career success, and presents two complementary explanations for gender differences in networks and their impact on careers: unequal network characteristics and unequal network returns. The research found that while men's and women's networks are similar in structure, differences in composition (such as proportion of men contacts) play a significant role in career success.
