Postharvest Treatment with Abscisic Acid Alleviates Chilling Injury in Zucchini Fruit by Regulating Phenolic Metabolism and Non-Enzymatic Antioxidant System

Alejandro Castro-Cegri et al.

Summary: Reports indicate that abscisic acid (ABA), a phytohormone, plays a role in reducing chilling injury in zucchini fruit. Chilling injury in harvested fruit stored at low temperatures is caused by cell damage from reactive oxygen species. This study investigates the impact of non-enzymatic antioxidants on cold stress tolerance in ABA-treated zucchini fruit. ABA treatment enhances the antioxidant capacity of the fruit through increased levels of ascorbate, carotenoids, and polyphenolic compounds. Specifically, ABA stimulates the production of flavonoids. The accumulation of these antioxidants due to ABA is associated with a decrease in oxidative stress and prevention of chilling injury. The findings highlight the importance of non-enzymatic antioxidants and polyphenolic metabolism in protecting zucchini fruit from chilling injury.

Application of polysaccharide-based edible coatings to improve the quality of zucchini fruit during postharvest cold storage

Alejandro Castro-Cegri et al.

Summary: The use of edible coatings, particularly polysaccharide-based coatings, has become popular for maintaining fruit quality during storage. This study found that a dextrin coating was the most effective in preserving the postharvest quality of zucchini fruit at low temperature. Furthermore, the addition of nutraceutical additives, such as oleuropein and olive oil, enhanced the effectiveness of the dextrin coating in reducing weight loss, chilling injury, and oxidative stress.

The R2R3 MYB transcription factor LoMYB21 regulates anther dehiscence by jasmonate biosynthesis pathway in Lilium oriental hybrid 'Siberia'

Ling He et al.

Summary: The present study analyzed the expression patterns of MYB transcription factors during anther dehiscence in lily and identified LoMYB21, a transcription factor related to JA signal transduction. Silencing LoMYB21 delayed anther dehiscence and reduced JA accumulation, indicating that LoMYB21 regulates anther dehiscence through the JA synthesis pathway. This study provides a theoretical basis for creating lilies without pollen contamination in the future.

Characterisation of the Mentha canadensis R2R3-MYB transcription factor gene McMIXTA and its involvement in peltate glandular trichome development

Xiwu Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, the function of the R2R3-MYB transcription factor gene McMIXTA in glandular trichome development in Mentha canadensis L. was investigated. It was found that McMIXTA played a positive role in regulating peltate glandular trichome development and the MIXTA/HD-ZIP IV complexes may be conserved regulators for glandular trichome initiation. These results provide useful information for understanding the regulatory mechanism of multicellular glandular trichome development.

Usage and action mechanism of oxylipins including jasmonic acid on physiological aspects of fruit production

Satoru Kondo

Summary: Plant hormones, specifically jasmonates, play crucial roles in regulating fruit tree growth and fruit production. Jasmonates affect various physiological processes such as fruit development, stress tolerance, and coloration. They interact with transcription factors and other plant hormones to modulate gene expression, ethylene metabolism, and signaling. Understanding the mechanisms of jasmonate action is important for improving fruit production.

RNA-seq based analysis of transcriptomic changes associated with ABA-induced postharvest cold tolerance in zucchini fruit

Alvaro Benitez et al.

Summary: An RNAseq analysis was performed to investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in ABA-induced postharvest cold tolerance in immature zucchini fruit. Results revealed the significance of certain metabolic and signaling pathways, as well as the role of transcription factors and genes involved in oxidative stress response and membrane and cell wall metabolism. ABA was found to regulate genes responsible for reducing oxidative stress damage, inducing cuticular wax biosynthesis, and repressing lignin biosynthesis.

The land plant-specific MIXTA-MYB lineage is implicated in the early evolution of the plant cuticle and the colonization of land

Bo Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a land plant-specific MYB transcription factor MpSBG9 was characterized in the early-diverging land plant model Marchantia polymorpha, showing its crucial role in regulating cuticle biosynthesis and promoting the formation of papillate cells. This implies a conserved MYB transcriptional regulation network in controlling the cutin biosynthesis pathway in the common ancestor of all land plants, with the specific MIXTA MYB lineage playing a role in the early origin and evolution of the cuticle.

To be a male or a female flower, a question of ethylene in cucurbits

Cecilia Martinez et al.

Summary: Most species within the Cucurbitaceae family have developed unisexual flowers, with easy transitions between different sex morphotypes. The domesticated species of this family exhibit higher variability in sex morphotypes, making them an ideal model for studying genetic mechanisms controlling sex determination in plants. Recent advances in genomics have highlighted the role of ethylene biosynthesis and signaling genes in determining floral sex.

Gustavo Cebrian et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that gain-of-function mutations of ethylene receptors in Cucurbita pepo increased salt tolerance during germination and vegetative growth, with reduced sensitivity to ethylene. The mutations resulted in earlier germination, faster root and shoot growth, and lower accumulation of Na+ in shoots and leaves, indicating a positive role of ethylene receptors in salt tolerance mechanisms in plants.
