Coupling effects of irrigation amount and nitrogen fertilizer type on grain yield, water productivity and nitrogen use efficiency of drip-irrigated maize

Jinjin Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different irrigation levels and nitrogen fertilizer types on maize production. The results showed that increasing irrigation levels and using specific types of nitrogen fertilizer can significantly improve maize yield and nitrogen use efficiency.

Soil water, nutrient distribution and use efficiencies under different water and fertilizer coupling in an apple-maize alley cropping system in the Loess Plateau, China

Xiaoyu Dou et al.

Summary: Soil water and nutrients are the main limiting factors for the stable development of alley cropping systems in the Loess Plateau of west Shanxi, China. The study found that water and fertilizer coupling regulation can improve soil water and nutrient distribution, as well as increase crop yield and productivity. A combination of 50-65% field capacity and 70% empirical fertilizer application is the optimal irrigation and fertilization management for this system.

Effects of long-term no tillage and straw return on greenhouse gas emissions and crop yields from a rice-wheat system in central China

Lijin Guo et al.

Summary: Long-term no tillage and straw return have significant impacts on greenhouse gas emissions and crop yields in the rice-wheat system, with temporal disparities observed in their effects. No tillage increases N2O emissions but reduces CH4 emissions, while straw return increases N2O and CH4 emissions as well as crop yields over a six-year period. Overall, no tillage with straw return shows potential for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and improving food security.

Applying more nitrogen is not always sufficient to address dryland wheat yield gaps in Australia

Roger Lawes et al.

Summary: The survey analysis of wheat yield gaps found that yield potential and nitrogen are important predictors of the yield gap, with fields of high yield potential more likely to have a higher yield gap. In high yielding regions, wheat yield gaps are related to crop rotation, leaf diseases, and weed populations; while in low rainfall zones, wheat yield gaps are related to soil pathogens.

The effect of solar radiation change on the maize yield gap from the perspectives of dry matter accumulation and distribution

Yang Yun-shan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of solar radiation on maize yield by creating different levels of radiation through shading. The results showed that variations in solar radiation led to differences in yield gaps among different maize cultivars. Selecting suitable cultivars can help increase maize yield and reduce yield gaps induced by changes in solar radiation levels in different regions or under climate change.

Yield gap and resource utilization efficiency of three major food crops in the world - A review

Rong Liang-bing et al.

Summary: This study provides an analysis of yield gap and resource utilization efficiency for wheat, maize, and rice. The discrepancy between potential and actual yields is significant, with factors such as climate, nutrients, and water being major yield-limiting factors. Improvement in nitrogen, water, and radiation utilization efficiency is still needed for better crop yield outcomes.

Optimum Water and Nitrogen Management Increases Grain Yield and Resource Use Efficiency by Optimizing Canopy Structure in Wheat

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Excessive nitrogen application and groundwater over-exploitation threaten resource sustainability in the North China Plain (NCP). Optimum water and nitrogen management improved canopy structure characteristics, resulting in higher yield and resource use efficiency. Leaf area index and specific leaf area were closely correlated with grain yield and water use efficiency, while canopy photon flux density and population uniformity were good indicators of yield and resource use efficiency.

Identifying the main crops and key factors determining the carbon footprint of crop production in China, 2001-2018

Xiaohui Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the carbon emissions and sequestration inventories, as well as the carbon footprint of 16 major crop systems in China from 2001 to 2018. Vegetables and tea were found to have the highest carbon footprints. Fertilization and irrigation were identified as key factors contributing to the increase in net carbon emissions, with reducing nitrogen loss being the most effective strategy for mitigating agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in the future.

How sustainable is sustainable intensification? Assessing yield gaps at field and farm level across the globe

Joao Vasco Silva et al.

Summary: This study suggests that while there is potential for intensification in cereal production in southern Ethiopia, the current input use in these farming systems is not economically and environmentally sustainable at farm level. Similarly, sustainable intensification in rice production in Central Luzon can help narrow yield gaps and improve N use efficiency, but is not profitable due to reliance on costly hired labor. On the other hand, arable farms in the Netherlands show higher economic performance, NUE and N surplus, indicating the need for improved resource-use efficiency and reduced environmental impacts for environmental sustainability. Public investments in innovation and profitable farming are essential for narrowing yield gaps and promoting sustainability at the farm level.

High nitrogen application rate and planting density reduce wheat grain yield by reducing filling rate of inferior grain in middle spikelets

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: High nitrogen application and high planting density have different effects on the number of grains per spike and the weight of 1000 kernels in wheat, mainly by reducing the number of grains per spike in the top and bottom spikelets, and decreasing the weight of grains in the middle spikelets.
