Understanding the Bounds of Legitimacy: Weber's Facets of Legitimacy and the Police Empowerment Hypothesis

Summary: Although there is evidence supporting the beneficial outcomes of police legitimacy, particularly in terms of empowerment, researchers have yet to agree on a unified definition and operationalization of legitimacy. Traditional authority has been found to have a stronger association with police empowerment compared to other factors such as trust and moral alignment. Further research is needed to replicate and build upon these findings.

Can We Really Defund the Police? A Nine-Agency Study of Police Response to Calls for Service

Adolescents' views of defunding the police, abolishing the police, and The Talk

Summary: This study examined the definitions of defunding and abolishing the police among American adolescents and how parental communication about the police relates to these definitions. The results showed that adolescents were more supportive of defunding the police, and those who frequently received parental communication about the police were more supportive of abolishing the police. Race/Ethnicity, Area and Willingness to Call Police

Summary: This study investigates how individuals' race/ethnicity and perceived area crime risk influence their willingness to call the police, and the underlying reasons for these influences. The results show significant differences between Blacks and Whites in seeking police assistance, while no difference is found between Hispanics and Whites in this regard. The study suggests that the racial gap in calling the police can be better explained by the normative perspective of police legitimacy, while the area influences on willingness to call the police are better accounted for by concern about crime.
