Chinese Supermom: re-domesticating women in reality TV shows

Wing Shan Ho

Summary: This study analyzes post-millennial Chinese reality shows focusing on motherhood through feminist media scholarship, against the social backdrop of the termination of the one-child policy and an aging population. It argues that these popular shows, exemplified by Supermom, promote and portray motherhood as the means of fulfillment for women, fueling the cultural perception of mandatory motherhood in China. Through critical discourse analysis, the study identifies the selection of celebrity mothers in Supermom, the construction of a female voice, and the establishment of male presence in the show.
