The adsorption properties were investigated through kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics. The adsorbent showed excellent stability within a pH range of 4-10 and was not significantly influenced by co-existing substances. Chemisorption was the main mechanism for phosphate adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was 102.90 mg/g, higher than other La-based adsorbents. The adsorption process was spontaneous, exothermic, and disordered. The adsorbent exhibited excellent effectiveness in real wastewater.

Removal of Cd(II), Co(II), Cr(III), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions from wastewater using polyethyleneimine (PEI) cryogels

Sema Bagdat et al.

Summary: Super porous polyethyleneimine (PEI) cryogels were used as adsorbents to remove Cd(II), Co(II), Cr(III), Ni(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) from contaminated waters. The optimum pH value and contact time for removing the analytes were determined as 4.0 and 90 min, respectively. The adsorption capacities of the sorbent ranged from 19.88 to 24.39 mg/g for target metal ion solutions with a concentration of 50 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The PEI cryogels showed selectivity and tolerance to high concentrations of different ions and successfully removed the target analytes from industrial wastewater samples with removal rates ranging from 80.35% to 99.89%.

Performance of biochar mixed cement paste for removal of Cu, Pb and Zn from stormwater

Pamodithya Wijeyawardana et al.

Summary: Using biochar as a partial replacement for Portland cement shows promise for mitigating environmental impacts. This study explores the effects of biochar type, percentage addition, and particle size on the removal of Cu, Pb, and Zn, as well as compressive strength in cementitious materials. The results indicate that biochar does not negatively impact heavy metal removal and can be used as a cement replacement, although the high pH needs to be neutralized before safe discharge.

Biochar Alleviates Phytotoxicity by Minimizing Bioavailability and Oxidative Stress in Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) Cultivated in Cd- and Zn-Contaminated Soil

Xirui Kang et al.

Summary: Soil contamination with multiple heavy metals is a serious global environmental issue. Biochar passivation is an effective technology to prevent heavy metal contamination, although its effects on compound-contaminated and weakly alkaline soil remain unclear. This study found that biochar can alleviate the phytotoxicity of heavy metals by transforming exchangeable components to stable forms. Biochar application also promotes plant growth, reduces oxidative stress, and decreases heavy metal accumulation. The passivation effect of biochar is influenced by the pyrolysis temperature.
