A Readily Scalable, Clinically Demonstrated, Antibiofouling Zwitterionic Surface Treatment for Implantable Medical Devices

Brian McVerry et al.

Summary: A simple surface modification technique has been developed to reduce microbial and protein adhesion on artificial materials, showing promising results in clinical applications. The treated surfaces exhibit strong resistance against adhesion and are non-toxic to cells. Surface-treated catheters have been approved by the FDA and have shown good clinical efficacy in patients.

PDMS-Zwitterionic Hybrid for Facile, Antifouling Microfluidic Device Fabrication

Anthony Mercader et al.

Summary: A new hybrid PDMS material with excellent anti-fouling properties was synthesized in this study, which can be widely used in the manufacture of biomedical devices. Experimental results showed that the PDMS-SB hybrid material has lower platelet deposition, and the manufacturing process is comparable to unmodified PDMS.

PDMS-PEG Block Copolymer and Pretreatment for Arresting Drug Absorption in Microphysiological Devices

Devin B. Mair et al.

Summary: An effective and simple method was developed to prevent drug absorption by PDMS by incorporating a PDMS-PEG block copolymer and pretreating the drug. The method addressed the hydrophobicity and permeability of PDMS and resulted in a mean reduction of drug absorption by 91.6% under optimal conditions. The method was also demonstrated to be applicable in a PDMS-based cardiac microphysiological system, enabling more accurate drug studies.

Antifouling and Antibacterial Polymer-Coated Surfaces Based on the Combined Effect of Zwitterions and the Natural Borneol

Qiuli Cheng et al.

Summary: By combining zwitterionic MPC with borneol compound, an excellent antifouling and antibacterial surface with superb hydrophilicity was prepared via Schiff-base bond. The copolymer's coordination between MPC and borneol moieties showed effective prevention of protein adsorption and inhibition of bacterial adhesion, making it a potential application in biomedical materials.
