'Catalyst plus X' strategies for transition metal-catalyzed olefin-polar monomer copolymerization

Chen Tan et al.

Summary: Transition metal-catalyzed olefin-polar monomer copolymerization has the potential to synthesize polar group-functionalized polyolefin materials. However, the traditional trial-and-error approach is challenging and time-consuming. Recent 'catalyst + X' strategies have emerged, which utilize the interactions between the catalyst and other components in the copolymerization system to influence the reaction and resulting material properties. This review summarizes selected examples of these strategies and discusses future perspectives.

Heterogenization Strategies for Nickel Catalyzed Synthesis of Polyolefins and Composites

Chen Zou et al.

Summary: Polyolefins are commonly used synthetic polymers, but their limited compatibility with polar materials has hindered their application in certain fields. Transition-metal-catalyzed copolymerization of olefin and polar functionalized monomers allows for the synthesis of polar-functionalized polyolefin materials with improved properties. Heterogenization strategies for the synthesis of high-performance heterogeneous nickel catalysts have been developed, offering better control over product morphology and improved polymerization processes.

Cooperativity in Shape-Persistent Bis-(Zn-salphen) Catalysts for Efficient Cyclic Carbonate Synthesis under Mild Conditions

Yeqing Xia et al.

Summary: This study describes a series of conformationally rigid (Zn-salphen)(2) complexes with potential enhanced catalytic activity for the coupling of CO2 with epoxides by fine-tuning the intermetallic separation and geometry. Some dibenzofuran derivatives exhibit significantly higher activity for the production of cyclic carbonate compared to their mononuclear analogues under identical conditions. Experimental results provide strong evidence of cooperative reactivity in these Zn-2 catalysts.

Tunable modalities in polyolefin synthesis via coordination insertion catalysis

Thi Tran et al.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of various methods for regulating the polymerization of olefins using transition metal complexes, including catalyst tuning through reaction engineering and introduction of external stimuli. The unique capabilities and limitations of different approaches are discussed, along with the potential impacts of externally regulated polymerization on applications and future research.

Copolymerization of Ethylene and Long-Chain Functional α-Olefins by Dinuclear Zirconium Catalysts

Jessica Sampson et al.

Summary: This study investigates the copolymerization of ethylene and alpha-olefins bearing alcohol groups using mono- and dizirconium bisamine bisphenolate catalysts. The results show lower incorporation levels with bimetallic catalysts, possibly due to steric hindrance between larger comonomers and the distal metal center. The data does not support a bimetallic mechanism for polar comonomer coordination and incorporation.
