Literacy Measures That Leverage the Strengths of Spanish-Speaking Latino Kindergarteners

Diana Leyva et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that standardized tests correlated positively with the IDELA food and animal vocabulary and personal narrative tasks for Latino kindergarteners. These tasks, which leverage eco-cultural assets, can be used as complementary assessments to measure the impact of interventions on the language and literacy skills of Latino dual-language learners in kindergarten.

Parental Math Input Is Not Uniformly Beneficial for Young Children: The Moderating Role of Inhibitory Control

Alex M. Silver et al.

Summary: This study investigated the moderating role of children's inhibitory control in the association between parental math input and children's math performance. The results showed that high levels of parent number talk were associated with higher math achievement among children with higher inhibitory control. This suggests that not all children benefit equally from parental math input, and interventions promoting math input at home should consider children's cognitive abilities.

Parent-child Interactions in Numeracy Activities: Parental Scaffolding, Mathematical Talk, and Game Format

Joyce Zhou-Yile Schnieders et al.

Summary: The study investigated differences in parent-preschooler interactions during numeracy-related games in two formats (electronic and traditional board), revealing that parental scaffolding behaviors and mathematical talk were more frequent in the traditional board game condition. Parents played different roles using the two game formats, and the affordances of each format influenced parental scaffolding behaviors.

Statistical power for cluster analysis

Edwin S. Dalmaijer et al.

Summary: Cluster algorithms are increasingly used in biomedical research, but there is no established method for calculating a priori statistical power in cluster analysis. Through simulation experiments, we found that clustering outcomes are mainly influenced by large effect sizes or the accumulation of many smaller effects, while differences in covariance structure have little impact. Sufficient statistical power can be achieved with relatively small samples (N = 20 per subgroup) as long as cluster separation is large. Additionally, we demonstrated that fuzzy clustering provides a more parsimonious and powerful alternative for identifying separable multivariate normal distributions.

Mathematical language and mathematical abilities in preschool: A systematic literature review

Eylul Turan et al.

Summary: Early general language during preschool is critical for children's mathematical abilities, especially mathematical language. This systematic review summarizes the evidence on the association between mathematical language and mathematical abilities in preschool children. The results show a positive correlation between mathematical language and mathematical abilities, with intervention studies demonstrating a direct impact. Future research should further explore this relationship and provide support for teachers and parents to improve the use of mathematical language in educational settings.

Facilitating young children?s numeracy talk in play: The role of parent prompts

Sarah H. Eason et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown the impact of parents' number language on children's engagement with numbers and mathematical achievement. Prompts from parents were found to be more effective than statements in encouraging children to use a greater diversity of number words, although overall, parents' number talk was infrequent.

Parent Math Anxiety Predicts Early Number Talk

Talia Berkowitz et al.

Summary: The study found that parent math anxiety can predict the amount of number talk children hear at home, independent of family socioeconomic status. Additionally, math anxiety predicts number talk for higher-SES parents but not for lower-SES parents. These relations specifically apply to parents' cardinal number talk, which has been shown to be crucial in children's math development.
