OH-EpiCap: a semi-quantitative tool for the evaluation of One Health epidemiological surveillance capacities and capabilities

Henok Ayalew Tegegne et al.

Summary: Despite the encouragement from international health agencies, the implementation of One Health (OH) surveillance systems remains limited in terms of collaboration and integration. The OH-EpiCap evaluation tool was developed as part of the OH European Joint Programme MATRIX project to assess and monitor the capacities and capabilities of OH epidemiological surveillance. The tool consists of a semi-quantitative questionnaire and a web application for visualizing results, and has been piloted on various foodborne hazards and emerging threats in multiple European countries. The tool helps identify strengths, weaknesses, and concrete actions for improvement, fostering collaboration and trust among surveillance stakeholders.

Users' perception of the OH-EpiCap evaluation tool based on its application to nine national antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems

Pedro Moura et al.

Summary: To evaluate the performance of AMR surveillance systems, the OH-EpiCap tool was developed. Feedback on the tool was provided based on its application to evaluate nine national AMR surveillance systems. The results showed that OH-EpiCap is an easy-to-use tool that provides a fast macro-overview of the application of OH concepts to AMR surveillance.

Capturing systematically users' experience of evaluation tools for integrated AMU and AMR surveillance

Lis Alban et al.

Summary: This paper presents an updated methodology for evaluating integrated surveillance of antimicrobial use and resistance. It includes guidelines for tool selection, scoring criteria, and an example application using the ECoSur evaluation tool. The methodology aims to assist users in selecting the most appropriate tool and provide valuable feedback to tool developers.

One Health compartmental analysis of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli on Reunion Island reveals partitioning between humans and livestock

Guillaume Miltgen et al.

Summary: Through a study on Reunion Island, we found that despite high contamination levels in animals, they are not the main source of ESBL-Ec in humans on this densely populated, high-income island. Therefore, public health policies should primarily focus on human-to-human transmission to prevent human infections with ESBL-Ec.

Monitoring antimicrobial usage in companion animals: exploring the use of the Danish VetStat database

Anne-Sofie Glavind et al.

Summary: Due to limitations in the VetStat database, accurate measurement of antimicrobial use in Danish companion animals is challenging. The database structure and data entry requirements do not fully capture the use of parenteral antimicrobials, leading to an underestimation of actual consumption. Improved data transfer from veterinary practitioners would ensure more accurate measurements.

Third joint inter-agency report on integrated analysis of consumption of antimicrobial agents and occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from humans and food-producing animals in the EU/EEA JIACRA III 2016-2018

Summary: The report analyzed data from 2016-2018 on antimicrobial consumption and antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from humans and food-producing animals obtained by the agencies' EU-wide surveillance networks. Significant variations in antimicrobial consumption between countries were observed in both human and food animal sectors.

Evaluating the Integration of One Health in Surveillance Systems for Antimicrobial Use and Resistance: A Conceptual Framework

Cecile Aenishaenslin et al.

Summary: It is widely acknowledged that surveillance of antimicrobial resistance must adopt a One Health approach, and the ISSE framework provides guidelines for evaluating the integration of this approach in monitoring systems, assisting evaluators to assess performance and value comprehensively and ultimately improve global surveillance of AMR and AMU.

Assessment of Evaluation Tools for Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Based on Selected Case Studies

Marianne Sandberg et al.

Summary: Regular evaluation of integrated surveillance for antimicrobial use and resistance is necessary, and this study assessed the effectiveness of six different evaluation tools. Each tool has its own strengths and suitability, with varying requirements for complexity and training for evaluators.
