Higher risk of cardiovascular mortality than cancer mortality among long-term cancer survivors

Zhipeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that cardiovascular death gradually outweighs cancer death as survival time increases for most cancer patients. Older age and local metastasis are independent risk factors for cardiovascular death, while being women, undergoing surgery, and receiving chemotherapy are associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular death.

Multi-Disciplinary Management in Rectal Cancer Survivorship: A Clinical Practice Review

Hilary Chan et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer globally, with rectal cancer accounting for one-third of cases in the USA. Advances in multimodality treatment have improved survival rates and quality of life outcomes for rectal cancer survivors. However, these treatments can also lead to chronic toxicities in multiple organs, necessitating a multidisciplinary care approach. This review examines the long-term toxicities associated with rectal cancer treatment, management considerations, and modifiable risk factors for better long-term health outcomes.

C-Reactive Protein and Risk of Cardiovascular Events and Mortality in Patients with Various Cardiovascular Disease Locations

Pascal M. Burger et al.

Summary: Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), but the relationship between inflammation and outcomes in patients with cerebrovascular disease (CeVD), peripheral artery disease (PAD), and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is still not well understood. This study found that elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) were independently associated with an increased risk of recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, regardless of the location of the CVD.

Association of LDLR, TP53 and MMP9 Gene Polymorphisms With Atherosclerosis in a Malaysian Study Population

Zalinah Ahmad et al.

Summary: Preliminary research suggests that increased expression levels of LDLR, TP53, and MMP9 genes are associated with atherosclerosis in coronary artery tissue. Further investigation analyzed specific gene polymorphisms in Malaysian individuals and found that the CT genotype of MMP9C>T polymorphism was significantly associated with the risk of developing atherosclerosis. However, the distribution of this genotype in the general Malaysian population was inconsistent across genders and ethnicities.

China special issue on gastrointestinal tumor-improved survival after multidisciplinary team decision for patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer: A multicenter, noninterventional, controlled study

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term survival of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer after MDT decision. The results showed that the implementation of MDT decisions significantly reduced the risk of death and prolonged overall survival. Moreover, there was a significant improvement in the survival of patients with colorectal cancer, while no significant difference was found in the survival of patients with gastric cancer.

Inflammation and Clinical Decline After Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Older Adults With Breast Cancer: Results From the Hurria Older Patients Prospective Study

Jingran Ji et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between inflammatory markers measured before adjuvant chemotherapy and chemotherapy-induced clinical decline in fit older adults with breast cancer. The study found that higher levels of IL-6 and CRP before chemotherapy were associated with an increased risk of chemotherapy-induced decline in frailty status among older breast cancer survivors who were fit before chemotherapy initiation.

Inflammation and cholesterol as predictors of cardiovascular events among patients receiving statin therapy: a collaborative analysis of three randomised trials

Paul M. Ridker et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relative importance of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC) as determinants of risk for major adverse cardiovascular events, cardiovascular death, and all-cause death among patients receiving statins. The study found that inflammation, as assessed by high-sensitivity CRP, was a stronger predictor for future cardiovascular events and death than cholesterol, as assessed by LDLC. These findings have implications for the selection of adjunctive treatments beyond statin therapy.

Prolonged impact of anti-cancer therapy on endothelial function and arterial stiffness in breast cancer patients

Maria Anastasiou et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of anthracycline-based chemotherapy, with or without trastuzumab, on endothelial function and arteriosclerosis in breast cancer patients. The results showed that there was a significant deterioration in endothelial function and arterial stiffness up to 15 months after chemotherapy initiation in breast cancer patients, and trastuzumab had no significant effect on these parameters.

Risk of heart failure among colon and rectal cancer survivors: a population-based case control study

Josephina G. Kuiper et al.

Summary: This population-based case-control study found that colon and rectal cancer survivors have an increased risk of developing heart failure (HF). There are differences in risk factors for HF between colon cancer and rectal cancer patients. Physicians and general practitioners should be more aware of this potential increased risk in order to improve survival rates for these patients.

Transitional changes in the structure of C-reactive protein create highly pro-inflammatory molecules: Therapeutic implications for cardiovascular diseases

J. Zeller et al.

Summary: C-reactive protein (CRP) is not only a marker of inflammation and predictor of cardiovascular risk, but also a direct pathogenic pro-inflammatory mediator in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. The different conformations of the CRP system can aggravate tissue injury in pathological conditions, and studying the structural changes of CRP could be a novel therapeutic target for cardiovascular diseases and excessive inflammation.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease and the immune system plays a significant role in its development and progression. Inflammation-induced endothelial dysfunction leads to the accumulation of lipoproteins and the formation of plaques. Chronic inflammation and psychological stress increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Low-density lipoprotein particles in atherosclerosis

Ya-Nan Qiao et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of human death, with atherosclerosis as its pathological basis. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) plays a crucial role in the development of atherosclerotic CVD. In addition to LDL cholesterol, LDL particle has been shown to be a more accurate predictor of CVD risk. Small dense LDL particles and oxidized LDL are both associated with atherosclerosis.
