Seismic failure modes of masonry structures exposed to Kahramanmaras, earthquakes (Mw 7.7 and 7.6) on February 6, 2023

Omer Mercimek

Summary: This study investigates the failure modes of masonry structures after the earthquakes in Kahramanmaras in 2023. It provides information on the building stock in Turkiye and the Middle East countries and discusses the major failure modes in masonry structures. The study presents the characteristics of ground acceleration and earthquake parameters, examines damage distributions, and identifies inadequate connections, low material strength, and lack of engineering service as causes for out-of-plane and corner failures in masonry structures. It also highlights the need for adequate lintel band and proposes strengthening methods.

Structural damages in masonry buildings in Adiyaman during the Kahramanmaras, (Turkiye) earthquakes (Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6) on 06 February 2023

Ercan Isika et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the seismic damage in Adiyaman province, especially in rural areas. The study analyzes the impact of earthquakes on buildings and proposes strategies for reconstruction or retrofitting. Non-compliance with seismic design codes is identified as the main cause of structural damage.

The effect of the Kahramanmaras earthquakes (Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6) on historical masonry mosques and minarets

Irfan Kocaman

Summary: The aim of this study is to analyze the field research and performance evaluation of historical masonry mosques and minarets in 11 different cities in the region. It is found that these structures were heavily damaged or collapsed after the earthquakes that occurred in the city of Kahramanmaras. In particular, minaret damages were concentrated on the transition sections and spire parts.

Structural Failures of Adobe Buildings during the February 2023 Kahramanmaras (Turkiye) Earthquakes

Ercan Isik

Summary: Turkey experienced significant destruction during the Kahramanmaras earthquake in February 2023, resulting in over 50,000 casualties. The earthquakes primarily affected 11 provinces, causing extensive damage to both urban and rural buildings. This study focuses on examining the failure and collapse mechanisms of adobe structures in the earthquake region.

Damage and performance evaluation of masonry buildings constructed in 1970s during the 2019 Albania earthquakes

Huseyin Bilgin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seismic response of masonry buildings damaged during the 2019 Albania earthquake, selecting four important typologies for performance analysis and damage assessment. Findings suggest that some buildings may reach a Near Collapse damage state at lower PGAs, emphasizing the catastrophic consequences decision makers should be aware of for similar future events.

Seismic vulnerability assessment and earthquake response of slender historical masonry bell towers in South-East Lombardia

Marco Valente

Summary: This study investigates the seismic vulnerability and earthquake response of five slender historical masonry bell towers in South-East Lombardy (Northern Italy) using a preliminary simplified procedure and advanced numerical simulations. The results show that the geometrical features and main vibration properties of the bell towers are key factors influencing their seismic performance, while the characteristics of the accelerograms also have a significant impact on the energy dissipated by tensile damage and the maximum normalized displacements of the bell towers. Structural geometrical characteristics play a crucial role in damage distribution among the different parts of the bell towers.
