Speaking vs. listening? Balance conversation attributes of voice assistants for better voice marketing

Peng Hu et al.

Summary: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping marketing through voice assistants that can speak and listen like humans, creating an opportunity for voice marketing. This research investigates how conversation attributes of voice assistants affect consumer trust and intention to engage in voice shopping. The study shows that consumers perceive the speaking attribute of voice assistants as more human-like than the listening attribute, resulting in reduced trust and willingness to accept recommendations from voice assistants, which hampers the development of voice marketing. The research suggests that AI giants should invest in technologies enabling human-like listening, while startups should enhance the congruency between conversation attributes.

Determinants and consequences of trust in AI-based customer service chatbots

Ashish Viswanath Prakash et al.

Summary: According to industry reports, AI-based chatbots have the potential to revolutionize online customer service. However, the lack of consumer trust and acceptance remains a concern. Limited research exists on the drivers and consequences of trust in AI-based chatbots. Therefore, a study was conducted to identify the factors influencing consumers' trust in text-based customer service chatbots and examine the impact of trust on behavioral intentions. The findings revealed that conversational cues, perceived functional and social attributes, and personal disposition to trust technology all play a role in trust formation. Trust, in turn, influences behavioral intentions. Interestingly, privacy risk was found to be an insignificant predictor of trust. The study offers insights into improving trust and suggests areas for future research.

This article investigates the dark side of BMI by using a demand-side approach and finds that passive innovation resistance can inhibit continuous adoption of BMI. However, the negative effects of this resistance can be reduced through the use of benefit comparisons or testimonials in business model announcements. This study contributes to the understanding of how stable customer predispositions affect the adoption process of BMI and provides effective countermeasures for managers to reduce the probability of BMI failure.
