Hot and cold rolling of a novel near-? titanium alloy: Mechanical properties and underlying deformation mechanism

Zhiyuan Jia et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties, microstructure evolution mechanism, texture variation process, and deformation mechanism of a near-alpha CT20 titanium alloy with different hot and cold rolling reductions were thoroughly investigated. It was found that the increase in rolling reduction led to a gradual increase in tensile strength and decrease in ductility. The mechanical properties were better along the rolling direction (RD) than the transverse direction (TD), which was attributed to the increase in grain boundary and dislocation density. The work-hardening rates and mechanical properties were influenced by the preferred orientation of alpha phase and the slip distances of dislocation during deformation.

Electromigration-enhanced Kirkendall effect of Cu/Ti direct diffusion welding by sparking plasma sintering

Hucheng Guo et al.

Summary: Electromigration-enhanced Kirkendall effect was observed in Cu/Ti diffusion welding by sparking plasma sintering. The study investigated the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Cu/Ti joints to understand the effect of electromigration-enhanced Kirkendall effect on diffusion joining mechanism. Four types of Cu-Ti intermetallic compounds were formed at the bonded joint interface: CuTi2, CuTi, Cu3Ti2, and beta-Cu4Ti. At lower welding temperatures, Cu atomic diffusion was enhanced by current, resulting in Kirkendall Voids and weak joint strength. However, at a higher temperature of 833 K, a continuous CuTi2 Kirkendall plane was formed and the growth of the brittle CuTi phase was impeded, leading to high strength joints.

Element diffusion and microstructure evolution at interface of stainless steel/Ti alloy joint by laser welding with AgCuTi filler metal

DeShui Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the connection between stainless steel and titanium alloy was successfully achieved by using AgCuTi filler metal to avoid the formation of brittle Ti-Fe intermetallic compounds. The filler metal diffused and bonded with the base metals on both sides, forming a good connection. No Ti-Fe intermetallic compounds were found in the joint, and Ti2Cu and AgTi2 intermetallic compounds with better ductility were formed at the filler-TC4 interface.

Ultrahigh coercivity and excellent thermal stability of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets by the diffusion of (Pr,Nd)-Dy-Cu-Al

Guantong Wei et al.

Summary: The effects of adding (Pr0.25Nd0.75)10Dy80Cu5Al5 alloy powders on the magnetic properties and microstructure of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets were investigated. The addition of (Pr0.25Nd0.75)10Dy80Cu5Al5 resulted in an ultrahigh coercivity of 3.14 T in a 6-mm-thick hot-deformed magnet, and improved the temperature coefficient of coercivity and remanence at 20-180℃, indicating excellent thermal stability. Microstructure observations showed that the addition of (Pr0.25Nd0.75)10Dy80Cu5Al5 led to the formation of thick nonferromagnetic intergranular phase, reduced grain size and aspect ratio, and the formation of the (Nd,Pr,Dy)2Fe14B main phase, which were the main reasons for the enhancement of coercivity and thermal stability.

Diffusion coefficient measurement and atomic mobility assessment for bcc Ti-V-Fe ternary alloys

Shihang Zhou et al.

Summary: Diffusion behaviors in bcc Ti-V-Fe ternary alloys at 1273 K and 1473 K have been studied. The composition-distance profiles were extracted from Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA) and represented by the ERror Function EXpansion (ERFEX). The inter-diffusion coefficients and impurity diffusion coefficients were extracted using the Whittle-Green and generalized Hall methods. The atomic mobility parameters for diffusion were assessed for the first time by reproducing the extracted diffusion coefficients, and the accuracy of this work was confirmed by successfully reproducing the composition-distance profiles and diffusion paths.

Ning Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the ternary diffusion behaviors of BCC Ti-rich Ti-V-Cr alloys at different temperatures using the diffusion couple technique. By extracting the inter-diffusion coefficients and impurity diffusion coefficients, and then evaluating the ternary diffusion coefficients and optimizing the atomic mobility parameters, we were able to simulate and accurately predict the composition profiles and diffusion paths of the Ti-V-Cr ternary alloy system.

L. Lavisse et al.

Summary: The role of ultrasonic shot-peening and laser-shock peening on the insertion of atmospheric nitrogen during high temperature oxidation of pure titanium and the improvement of its oxidation resistance is reported. It is found that only the LSP treatment can form a stable nitrogen-rich layer, acting as a barrier for oxygen diffusion.

High strength and toughness of Ti-6Al-4V sheets via cryorolling and short-period annealing

Feilong Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, the trade-off between strength and toughness in titanium alloys was overcome by cryorolling and short-period vacuum annealing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. After annealing, the alloy exhibited significantly improved yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation, as well as the highest reported static toughness among rolled titanium alloys. The coarsening of grains was inhibited, and the shear band structure was weakened, leading to enhanced toughness. This study is of great importance for the manufacturing of high strength and toughness Ti-6Al-4V alloys and other types of titanium alloys.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy in laser additive manufactured TC4 titanium alloy by grain refinement

Xiaotong Pang et al.

Summary: The addition of ZrB2 through laser melting deposition can refine the prior-beta grains in the TC4 titanium alloy, resulting in a fine basket-weave structure. The mechanical anisotropy of the modified-TC4 alloys decreases with the increase of ZrB2 content. The alloy with 0.5 wt% ZrB2 addition shows an excellent combination of strength and ductility, with isotropic characteristics.
