Sajjad Karimnejad et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the effect of pulsating flow on the settling dynamics of rigid circular particles. The results show that pulsation can alter the processes of drafting, kissing, and tumbling (DKT), and the findings are useful for solving engineering problems like filtration and particle sorting.

Prediction of radiative intensity on thermal radiation transfer with graded index media by element differential method

Yifan Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents the element differential method (EDM) for solving the radiative transfer equation in graded index media, achieving high angular and spatial resolutions of radiative intensity. The angular domain is discretized using the discrete ordinates method (DOM), while the spatial domain is discretized using the element differential method. An upwind scheme is employed to suppress non-physical oscillations due to the strong convection characteristics of the radiative transfer equation. Several examples demonstrate the model's higher accuracy and efficiency compared to existing references in graded index media. The results also show that the upwind scheme effectively suppresses non-physical oscillations and the element differential method handles radiation discontinuities.

Three-dimensional mesoscopic simulation of radiative transfer in graded index media

Si Wu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for solving simple steady-state and transient radiative transfer problems in three-dimensional (3D) graded index (GRIN) media. The concept of local radiative transfer direction is introduced to address complex curved trajectories in 3D GRIN media. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of LBM in solving radiative transfer problems in 3D GRIN media. The influences of different optical parameters on steady-state and transient radiative transfer are discussed.

Element different method for three-dimensional radiative transfer within heterogeneous media

Yifan Li et al.

Summary: This paper uses the element differential method and an upwind scheme to accurately calculate three-dimensional radiative heat transfer in non-uniform media. The effectiveness and correctness of this method are verified through comparisons with results in the literature. A cell-by-cell strategy is employed to improve computational efficiency and suppress non-physical oscillations, and the method is extended to handle intermittent refractive index and achieve high-resolution description of radiative intensity in the angular direction.

A sweeping algorithm of unstructured elements in discontinuous spectral element method for thermal radiation in irregular multidimensional geometries

Jing Ma et al.

Summary: This article proposes a discontinuous spectral element method (DSEM) coupled with an element-by-element sweeping strategy to solve the radiative transfer equation (RTE) for participating media in irregular geometries. The spatial domain of RTE is discretized using unstructured meshes, and the angular direction is discretized as a set of contrast angles using structured quadrilateral meshes. Both the spatial domain and angular direction are solved simultaneously using DSEM. However, this coupled solution leads to a large-scale matrix problem. To address this issue, the element-by-element sweeping strategy optimizes the ordering of unstructured spatial elements. Several examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of DSEM with the element-by-element sweeping strategy. Compared to the original sweep strategy, the element-by-element approach significantly improves calculation efficiency and reduces computational time.

Lattice Boltzmann method for radiative transfer in two-layered slab with graded-index and Fresnel reflecting surfaces

Guillaume Lambou Ymeli et al.

Summary: The transport of radiative transfer in a two-layered slab with graded refractive indices is analyzed using the lattice Boltzmann method. The radiative intensity is found as a superposition of two waves, reflecting and refracting at the boundaries and interface. The methodology is tested for steady-state problems and time-resolved reflectance and transmittance. The results show that the parameters significantly influence radiative transfer, and the developed LBM is an efficient solver for inhomogeneous layered media.

Investigation of transient coupled conduction and radiation heat transfer in the linearly anisotropic scattering cylindrical medium by spectral collocation method

Yasong Sun et al.

Summary: A spectral collocation method (SCM) is proposed for solving transient conduction and radiation heat transfer problems in infinitely long annular cylinders with participating medium, achieving high accuracy even with few nodes. The method discretizes both spatial and angular domains for the radiative transfer equation, and only spatial domain for the transient heat conduction equation using fully implicit Euler scheme. The high order spectral collocation scheme approximates spatial and angular derivative terms as well as scattering source integral term.

Flow control of two tandem cylinders by a highly flexible filament: Lattice spring IB-LBM

B. Afra et al.

Summary: In this study, the combination of Lattice Spring Method (LSM) and Immersed Boundary-Lattice Boltzmann Method (IB-LBM) is employed to investigate fluid-elastic body interaction problems under unsteady conditions. The method eliminates the need for arbitrary spring parameters to determine the deformation of the flexible body. Numerical simulations are conducted to examine the effects of various variables on the lift and drag coefficients of tandem cylinders. The results show that the fluctuations of the lift coefficient are reduced when the filament's capillary number is at its maximum value and the filament's clamped edge is located in the middle of the cylinders. Additionally, increasing the filament's length results in a significant reduction in the drag coefficient on the downstream cylinder.
