Chronic toxicity study of ammonia exposure in juvenile yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco

Zhuo Sun et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth performance of yellow catfish under chronic low ammonia exposure and determine the upper limit of growth tolerance for ammonia. The results showed that the growth performance of yellow catfish significantly declined when ammonia level exceeded 1.25 mg/L TAN. It is recommended that juvenile yellow catfish not be exposed to ammonia concentrations >1.25 mg/L TAN for prolonged periods of time.

High dissolved oxygen exacerbates ammonia toxicity with sex-dependent manner in zebrafish

Sheng-Xiang Sun et al.

Summary: Ammonia nitrogen is an important environmental factor that negatively affects fish health in ecosystems and aquaculture. This study investigated the combined effects of dissolved oxygen and ammonia on zebrafish, with a focus on gender differences. The results showed that oxygenated ammonia exposure led to increased mortality, gill damage, gene expressions related to inflammation and apoptosis, elevated plasma ammonia contents, and decreased ammonia discharge. Furthermore, males exhibited more severe negative impacts than females when subjected to ammonia stress. This study provides new insights into the gender-dependent impacts of ammonia toxicity and the effects of oxygenation on fish resistance to ammonia.

Effects of ammonia exposure on anxiety behavior, oxidative stress and inflammation in guppy (Poecilia reticulate)

Chunnuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Ammonia is an important environmental factor in aquatic ecosystems, and its effect on guppies was evaluated in this study. Fish were exposed to different concentrations of ammonia for 48 hours, and the results showed that ammonia induced anxiety, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the guppies. The study provides insights into the mechanism of ammonia toxicity in guppies.

Effects of ammonia nitrogen stress on the blood cell immunity and liver antioxidant function of Sepia pharaonis

Yonghui Chai et al.

Summary: The study investigated the toxicity effects of ammonia nitrogen on cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis, finding significant impacts on blood cell immunity, respiratory burst activities, phagocytosis rate, and antioxidant function. Exposure to low or high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen led to increased apoptotic blood cells, respiratory burst activities, and MDA content, while decreasing phagocytosis, SOD, and CAT activity. These results suggest that ammonia nitrogen stress can disrupt immune and antioxidant systems in cuttlefish.

Underwater Localization and Mapping Based on Multi-Beam Forward Looking Sonar

Chensheng Cheng et al.

Summary: SLAM plays a vital role in AUV navigation tasks, but implementing real-time underwater SLAM on a small AUV is challenging. This paper presents a filter based methodology for underwater SLAM, which extracts environmental features using a multi-beam forward looking sonar and converts sonar images to sparse point cloud format through filtering. The proposed method fuses data from various sources to estimate AUV pose and generate an occupancy grid map.

Summary: Fish locomotion analysis provides important information for aquaculture managers. This study examined and compared fish locomotion in aquaponic and recirculating aquaculture systems using computer vision. The results showed that fish locomotion in aquaponic systems is significantly higher than that in recirculating aquaculture systems, and aquaponic systems have stronger nitrogen absorption capacity.

Recent advances of target tracking applications in aquaculture with emphasis on fish

Yupeng Mei et al.

Summary: In aquaculture, fish behavioral monitoring is crucial for scientific management and reducing losses from disease and stress. Fish tracking technology, using computer vision, is a powerful tool for monitoring fish movement and detecting abnormal behaviors. However, fish tracking using computer vision models faces challenges like fish deformation, occlusion, and scale changes. This paper reviews the progress of tracking algorithms in fish research and discusses different methods, including deep learning approaches. It also summarizes datasets and evaluation metrics for fish tracking and provides experimental data. Finally, it discusses future directions, such as combining fish tracking methods with Transformer, for accelerating the advancement of smart fishery and precision farming.
