Delaying sowing of cover crops decreases the ability to reduce nitrate leaching

Uttam Kumar et al.

Summary: Under favorable growth conditions, cover crops can efficiently scavenge available nitrogen in the soil and reduce nitrate leaching. However, the effectiveness of nitrate leaching reduction by cover crops is influenced by the growth conditions after sowing and their biomass and nitrogen assimilation characteristics. In this study, the ability of fodder radish, phacelia, and oats to reduce nitrate leaching was evaluated based on different sowing times in Denmark over three years. The results showed that the N uptake and nitrate leaching reduction decreased with later sowing times, and fodder radish had the highest nitrate leaching reduction on average. Early sowing of fodder radish was found to be the most effective combination for maximum nitrate leaching reduction.

When do cover crops reduce nitrate leaching? A global meta-analysis

Amin Nouri et al.

Summary: Cover crops have been found to significantly reduce nitrate leaching in agricultural systems, with the greatest effects observed in cover crops from Brassicaceae and Poaceae families, as well as on Ultisols, Histosols, and Inceptisols. The effectiveness of cover crops in reducing nitrate leaching is influenced by soil type and composition, with higher sand content leading to better results.

Effect of Sowing Date on the Development of Lacy Phacelia (Phacelia Tanacetifolia Benth.)

Zuzana Kubikova et al.

Summary: Experiments on lacy phacelia were conducted from 2017 to 2021 to assess the impact of sowing date on stand development. The results showed that earlier sowing dates resulted in slower growth but higher average height. The third sowing date exhibited the worst performance in terms of height, canopy closure, and weed infestation. The influence of sowing date on yield parameters was minimal, except for a reduction in germinative capacity in the first year.
