Evaluation of the yield and heavy metal bioaccumulation in the fruit body of Pleurotus ostreatus grown on sugar mill wastewaters

Funda Atila et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of sugar mill wastewater (SMWW) on the cultivation cycle, yield, and health risks of Pleurotus ostreatus. The results showed that increasing SMWW concentration increased the yield and biological efficiency of P. ostreatus. However, there was also an increase in heavy metal accumulation, although it remained below the recommended daily intake. Therefore, using SMWW as a wetting agent can reduce freshwater usage and the need for additive materials, while maintaining mushroom production safety.

The yields and quality of golden oyster mushroom cultivated on common reed substrates

Xiaoyu Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the yield distribution and nutrient changes in mushroom flushes when cultivating golden oyster mushrooms on common reed substrates. Different flushes of mushrooms were observed, with biological efficiencies of 69.10% for three flushes and 75.98% for four flushes. Crude protein content decreased while total sugar content increased from the first to fourth flushes under certain treatment. Calcium concentrations increased, while heavy metal concentrations remained within safety standards. Inhomogeneous environmental conditions in the cultivation room led to changes in the number of flushes and nutrient quality of the mushrooms.

Quality characteristics and non-volatile taste formation mechanism of Lentinula edodes during hot air drying

Xinmeng Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that as the drying time increased, the moisture content of Lentinula edodes gradually decreased, leading to improvements in appearance, taste, and overall quality to a certain extent. Additionally, succinic acid plays a significant role in the taste of dried L.edodes products.

Sustainable Valorization of Four Types of Fruit Peel Waste for Biogas Recovery and Use of Digestate for Radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Pusa Himani) Cultivation

Arwa A. AL-Huqail et al.

Summary: Food waste is a global issue, and this study investigates the potential of fruit peel waste for biogas production and crop cultivation. The results show that fruit peel waste can be effectively used for biogas production, and the digestate obtained from the process can improve soil fertility. This study suggests an efficient method of managing fruit peel waste through biogas production and crop cultivation.

EVALUATION OF TOXIC ELEMENT CONTENT AND HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT OF EDIBLE WILD MUSHROOMS

Patryk Nowakowski et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the content of toxic elements in 48 wild mushrooms, showing that some mushrooms have high levels of Hg, Pb, Cd, and As in dried state. L. perlatum may pose a threat to human health due to its high levels of Hg and As.

Biogas Production from Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Spent Mushroom Substrate with Different Livestock Manure

Xionghui Gao et al.

Summary: Utilization of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) as a sustainable substrate for biogas production can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Combining SMS with chicken manure yields higher cumulative methane yield, with factors such as operational conditions and C/N ratio playing important roles in methane production.

The Effect of Ammonia Toxicity on Methane Production of a Full-Scale Biogas Plant-An Estimation Method

Sotirios D. Kalamaras et al.

Summary: Ammonia accumulation in biogas plants reactors can lead to reduced methane production, with ammonia toxicity being a significant factor causing this decline. Using biomethane potentials (BMPs) and actual CH4 production data, this study found that ammonia toxicity accounted for a portion of the reduced CH4 production, which can be estimated based on ammonia concentrations levels.

Summary: This study presents the combined application of treated dairy wastewater and agricultural residues for Agaricus bisporus mushroom cultivation, with significant nutrient uptake and increased mushroom productivity observed when using dairy wastewater for substrate moistening. The logistic model proved to be more reliable than the modified Gompertz model in determining the growth and yield kinetics of A. bisporus.
