Molecular investigation of haemotropic mycoplasmas and Coxiella burnetii in free-living Xenarthra mammals from Brazil, with evidence of new haemoplasma species

Laryssa Borges de Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and characterization of Coxiella burnetii and haemoplasma DNA in Xenarthra mammals in Brazil, finding that these animals may not act as hosts for C. burnetii but discovering new putative haemotropic Mycoplasma species.

Hemotropic Mycoplasma

Severine Tasker

Summary: Hemotropic mycoplasmas are wall-less bacteria that exist worldwide. They infect dogs and cats, causing hemolytic anemia and fever. The main species in dogs and cats are M. haemocanis and M. haemofelis, respectively. The transmission of these species is likely through vertical, fighting/biting, and vector-borne transmission. PCR on blood samples is the reliable method for diagnosis, as cytology is not very sensitive. Prompt treatment with doxycycline for at least 2 weeks is usually successful in treating clinical disease. Subclinical carrier status is common, but reactivation of the disease is rare. Zoonotic infection is possible, most likely through direct contact with bats.

Molecular survey and genetic characterization of 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemolamae' in llamas (Lama glama) and alpacas (Vicugna pacos) from Southern Chile.

Patricio Ramos et al.

Summary: This study conducted a molecular survey and identification of hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. in domestic South American Camelids from Southern Chile. The results showed a presence of hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. in llamas and alpacas in the region, with low diversity observed.
