Between impartiality and politicization: Confidence in the judiciary among political winners and losers

Standing up for Democracy? Explaining Citizens' Support for Democratic Checks and Balances

Summary: Winners and losers of elections have different stakes in protecting democratic institutions, with partisanship and economic performance influencing support for checks and balances. Supporters of losing parties and those less satisfied with the economy tend to support checks and balances more. Opponents of governing parties are less likely to accept potential infringements on the independence of the judiciary. Improved economic performance leads to higher acceptance of judicial reform. Citizens' support for checks and balances is shown to be contingent and volatile.

Political Trust in Early Adolescence and Its Association with Intended Political Participation: A Cross-sectional Study Situated in Flanders

Permissive Winners? The Quality of Democracy and the Winner-Loser Gap in the Perception of Freedoms

Summary: This research provides evidence from survey data in 18 Latin American countries that winners and losers respond differently to the quality of democracy. Winners express more favorable assessments of the supply of freedoms, while losers are more willing to acknowledge improvements or declines in the quality of democracy. The potential consequences of the winner-loser gap for regime stability are highly dependent on the democratic attributes of the political context.

Summary: Inclusion of populist radical right (PRR) parties in coalition governments in Western Europe has asymmetric effects on satisfaction with democracy (SWD), increasing it among nativists while decreasing it less or not at all among non-nativists. The strategies of mainstream parties towards PRR parties also play a role in shaping SWD among different groups. This phenomenon can be explained by the concept of Easton's 'reservoir of goodwill', which highlights the impact of good performance and responsiveness in generating political support.
