Damage localization for composite structure using guided wave signals with Gramian angular field image coding and convolutional neural networks

Yunlai Liao et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel damage diagnosis method combining guided wave-based structural health monitoring with Gramian angular field image coding and convolutional neural networks is proposed to improve the accuracy of damage localization in composite structures. The method compresses guided wave data using an improved piecewise aggregate approximation algorithm and converts the multi-path fused damage indexes into 2-D images using GAF. A CNN model is then constructed to learn high-level features and conduct damage location regression. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method compared to other state-of-the-art techniques.

Debonding detection of defected CFRP-concrete interface using active microwave thermography

Xingxing Zou et al.

Summary: This study presents an investigation of non-destructive evaluation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer-concrete interfacial debonding using active microwave thermography. The results show that AMT can quickly detect the initial defects at the CFRP-concrete interface, and the presence of such defects significantly decreases the load-carrying capacity of the joint. AMT can also monitor the progressive debonding process of the CFRP-concrete joints under increasing load.

Slow crack growth in laminate composites via in-situ X-ray tomography and simulations

Imad Hanhan et al.

Summary: A compact tension T650/5320 laminate composite was characterized using in-situ X-ray tomography to analyze the damage mechanisms during cyclic loading. The 3D image processing analysis revealed the presence of intralaminar cracking and delamination facilitating ply cross-over. A finite element analysis was conducted to compute the change in stored energy per cycle, dU/dN, which showed that the observed intralaminar crack growth rates collapsed to a single curve.

Phased array ultrasonic inspection and automated identification of wrinkles in laminated composites

Haiyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method that combines phased array ultrasonic inspection and deep learning to detect and localize wrinkles in laminated composites. A convolutional neural network model is established to recognize wrinkles at different depths using the short-time Fourier transform of waveforms. The model training is accelerated through simulation in PZFlex, and achieves high accuracy in training and testing. This method simplifies the analysis of low signal to noise ratio, non resonance matching, and near field effect in ultrasonic inspection of composites, providing a reliable basis for efficient wrinkle detection automatically.
