Differences in intra-foot movement strategies during locomotive tasks among chronic ankle instability, copers and healthy individuals

Regional plantar forces and surface geometry variations of a chronic ankle instability population described by statistical shape modelling

Summary: This study compared foot morphology and regional plantar forces among chronic ankle instability (CAI) patients, copers, and healthy individuals using 3-dimensional shape models and force measurements. The results revealed that CAI patients had a more pronounced bulging of the lateral malleolus, copers showed flexion of the lesser toes and a bulging of the medial foot in the sagittal plane, while healthy individuals had a larger heel width and a bulging of the heel in the sagittal plane. Additionally, healthy individuals exhibited significantly higher summated plantar forces and greater plantar forces in the lateral heel area during the early contact phase. Overall, this study suggests that repetitive ankle sprains may lead to the bulging of the lateral malleolus and CAI and copers stabilize the ankle joint by medially shifting the center of pressure.

Acute Effects of Heel-to-Toe Drop and Speed on Running Biomechanics and Strike Pattern in Male Recreational Runners: Application of Statistical Nonparametric Mapping in Lower Limb Biomechanics

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the acute effect of heel-to-toe drop (HTD) and running speed on lower limb biomechanics and strike pattern in recreational runners. The results showed that shoes with -8 mm HTD significantly increased strike index and vertical instantaneous loading rate. The range of motion of metatarsophalangeal, ankle, and knee joints also significantly changed.

Summary: Individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI) showed significantly greater ankle internal rotation during landing, while anticipated landings resulted in more ankle inversion and external rotation, knee abduction, and hip adduction pre-landing. However, there were similar proximal-joint kinematics in both groups during landing, suggesting the potential role of knee and hip joints in assisting with ankle-joint stability in CAI individuals.
