Reducing IBF with a novel MPGD structure using a bulked mesh on a GEM

A. Glaenzer et al.

Summary: Micromegas and Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors are commonly used in Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) due to their simplicity and accuracy for reconstructing particle trajectories. However, these detectors suffer from ion backflow, which can create space charge in the TPC. In this study, a new Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) structure that combines a mesh and a GEM surmounted by a mesh is proposed. The prototypes using this new structure show a reduction in ion backflow to less than 0.2% with a total gain of around 2000.

Commissioning and running experience with the CMS GE1/1 system

L. Petre

Summary: The CMS GE1/1 system was installed in October 2020 for the CMS endcap muon system upgrades. It has been commissioned and is now being used for data taking in the LHC Run 3. The system consists of 144 GE1/1 detectors read-out by VFAT3 chip, which communicates with the mu TCA backend. Each detector is equipped with VFAT3, GBTx, VTRx, VTTx, and a Virtex-6 FPGA. This paper presents the commissioning and running experience of the CMS GE1/1 system over 2 years of operations, focusing on the electronic performance and addressing the main issues encountered. The status of future GE2/1 and ME0 GEM stations is also briefly discussed.

Performance of triple-GEM detectors for the CMS Phase-2 upgrade measured in test beam

Antonello Pellecchia et al.

Summary: Triple-GEM detectors for the GE2/1 and ME0 stations of the endcap muon system for the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS Experiment have been tested and found to have excellent local efficiency and reduced dead areas with the use of GEM foils employing random hole sectorization. The spatial resolution of the tracker has been measured and found to be close to the expected value of 75 µm.

High rate capability studies of triple-GEM detectors for the ME0 upgrade of the CMS muon spectrometer

M. Bianco et al.

Summary: This article discusses the challenges brought by the upgrade of the high-luminosity LHC and the progress in the development of high-rate capable detectors for the CMS-ME0 project. Researchers are exploring the use of triple-gas electron multiplier technology and a novel foil design to address the impact of high luminosity and harsh background environment on detector performance.

Summary: Soft X-ray radiation emitted from tokamak plasmas contains valuable information about plasma performance, but traditional semiconductor detectors cannot be used in harsh environments. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate new detector technologies that are more suitable for such environments, and propose strategies for reconstructing impurity radiation.

The qualification of GEM detector and its application to imaging

A. Ahmed et al.

Summary: The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) is a new age detector that can handle high particle flux. GEM foils, constructed using insulating foil coated with copper, are the main components of these detectors. This study examines the defect and uniformity of the foils' holes, as well as their electrical properties, such as leakage current and stability. The feasibility of using GEMs for imaging is also explored, showing promising results for various applications like medical imaging and cargo imaging.

Quality control of mass-produced GEM detectors for the CMS GE1/1 muon upgrade

M. Abbas et al.

Summary: The upgrades to the Large Hadron Collider will expand the physics program of the CMS experiment, but also present challenges for detector operations, triggering, and data analysis. Additional muon detectors have been installed in the CMS endcaps to address these challenges. Out of 161 detectors produced, 144 have been installed in the CMS experiment.

The upgrade of the ALICE TPC with GEMs and continuous readout

J. Adolfsson et al.

Summary: The upgrade of the ALICE TPC to address high interaction rates at the CERN LHC Run 3 and Run 4 involved designing new readout chambers and front-end electronics, including Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors and SAMPA chip-based continuous readout electronics. Construction and quality control procedures of these new elements were detailed, with the upgrade completed in 2020 after a nine-year period of R&D, construction, and assembly.

Charge sharing in single and double GEMs

Promita Roy et al.

Summary: The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology is widely used in high-rate particle physics experiments, with criteria such as radiation hardness, ageing resistance, and stability against discharges being crucial for long-term operation. By using multiple devices to share electron multiplication, the maximum sustainable gain can be significantly increased. Transverse electron diffusion reduces charge density in the last multiplier, and numerical investigations are needed to further understand this process and its effects on detector stability.

Numerical estimation of discharge probability in GEM-based detectors

P. K. Rout et al.

Summary: The discharge probability in GEM-based gaseous detectors was numerically estimated using an axisymmetric hydrodynamic model. Initial primary charge configurations in the drift region were found to significantly affect the subsequent evolution of detector response. Despite simplifying and drastic assumptions in the numerical model, the comparison with experimental data was encouraging.
