High soil strength and cereal crop responses to deeper tillage on sandy soils in a semi-arid environment

Murray Unkovich et al.

Summary: Grain production in Australia faces challenges due to unfavorable climatic and soil conditions. Deep tillage has shown significant yield responses, but the specific mechanisms are not yet clear. This study suggests that crops respond more to deep tillage than to nutrition interventions, and increased crop transpiration, ear density, and grain number contribute most to yield increases. Crop water use does not seem to be the main driver of yield responses to deep tillage, but rather the hormonal responses affecting crop tillering and development.

Modification of the RZWQM2-P model to simulate labile and total phosphorus in an irrigated and manure-amended cropland soil

Peng Pan et al.

Summary: With the expansion of the dairy industry, the use of phosphorus-enriched dairy manure as a replacement for chemical fertilizer has increased. However, this practice can lead to excessive accumulation of total phosphorus in the soil and increase the risk of environmental phosphorus pollution. To improve the simulation of total soil phosphorus, the P module in the RZWQM2-P model was modified using the soil P pool structure from the EPIC model. The modified model showed satisfactory simulation results for labile soil P, total soil P, plant P uptake, and crop yield.

Measured and simulated effects of residue removal and amelioration practices in no-till irrigated corn (Zea mays L.)

Lidong Li et al.

Summary: This study measured and simulated the effects of different management practices, including irrigation, stover retention, and cover crop use, on soil N2O emissions in a long-term continuous corn system. The results showed that reducing stover retention could decrease soil N2O emissions and deficit irrigation could reduce soil N2O emissions in the presence of cover crops. This study improves our understanding of the mechanisms behind the effects of agricultural management on soil N2O emissions.

Summary: The impacts of rapid warming on soil organic matter decomposition in King George Island, Maritime Antarctic, remain unclear. Most vegetation cover is dominated by mosses, which contribute carbohydrates and C-alkyl but lack lignin for aromatic compounds and humus formation. The response of Antarctic microbial respiration to substrate and temperature increase is not yet understood.

A modularized parallel distributed High-Performance computing framework for simulating seasonal frost dynamics in Canadian croplands

Ziwei Li et al.

Summary: The winter/spring season in cold climate regions is susceptible to nutrient loss and greenhouse gas emissions due to climate change. The RZ-SHAW model effectively describes snow and soil freezing dynamics but is computationally intensive. To reduce simulation runtimes, a parallel high-performance computing framework (RS-DPCF) with multi-threading and multi-processing capabilities was developed. The RS-DPCF program significantly reduced RZ-SHAW calibration time and allowed field-scale simulations of overwintering conditions for multiple croplands across Canada.

Temperature sensitivity of soil organic carbon respiration along a forested elevation gradient in the Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda

Joseph Okello et al.

Summary: Tropical montane forests have high levels of soil organic carbon storage, but global warming may affect these stocks through enhanced soil respiration. In situ and ex situ warming studies were conducted along an elevation gradient in Uganda. The results showed that specific heterotrophic CO2 respiration decreased linearly with increasing elevation, and the temperature sensitivity increased. After 2 years of in situ warming, specific heterotrophic SOC respiration tended to be lower, while the delta C-13 values and SOC content tended to increase and decrease, respectively. In conclusion, climate warming may trigger enhanced losses of SOC from tropical montane forests due to temperature sensitivity and SOC content changes.

Methane emissions in japonica rice paddy fields under different elevated CO2 concentrations

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Elevated CO2 concentrations do not have a significant impact on CH4 emissions in paddy fields, but they do increase the CH4 emission/yield ratio linearly. There is a significant linear correlation between CH4 flux and rice shoot biomass. Soil urease activity, dissolved organic carbon, ammonium content, invertase activity, dissolved organic carbon, and nitrate content can partially explain the variation in CH4 emissions.

Effects of alternate wetting and drying irrigation on yield, water and nitrogen use, and greenhouse gas emissions in rice paddy fields

Haomiao Cheng et al.

Summary: Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation is a reliable and widespread water-saving technology for rice production. This review comprehensively assesses the effects of AWD on water use, yield, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It also explores the optimal AWD water thresholds. The study finds that the difference between continuous flooding (CF) and AWD thresholds, as well as soil types, significantly impact water use, yield, and NUE. Additionally, CF thresholds and fertilizer-N rates are key indicators affecting GHG emissions. Optimization models are established to determine the optimal AWD water thresholds for different soil types. Case analysis shows that adopting the optimal AWD water management can achieve water savings and increased water productivity without compromising yield, NUE, and GHG emissions.

Summary: Agriculture contributes considerably to global greenhouse gas emissions. The study used the eddy covariance technique and the random forest technique to investigate GHG fluxes in croplands. Environmental and vegetation factors were found to be more important drivers of GHG fluxes at field scale. Pea and maize acted as GHG sinks during the growing seasons, but substantial N2O emissions were observed during the early establishment phase.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different residue and tillage practices on soil CO2 and N2O emissions using the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2). The results showed that residue and tillage practices had cumulative effects on CO2 emissions over the long term, but not on N2O emissions. The study demonstrated that the RZWQM2 is a valuable tool for evaluating the long-term impacts of conservation practices on CO2 and N2O emissions.
