Lamellation fractures in shale oil reservoirs: Recognition, prediction and their influence on oil enrichment

Xiaojiao Pang et al.

Summary: Lamellation fractures have significant effects on reservoir quality and hydraulic fracturing engineering in shale oil reservoirs. They are parallel along weak bedding planes and favor the connectivity of pores and throats, leading to high reservoir quality in shale oil reservoirs.

Bedding parallel fractures in fine-grained sedimentary rocks: Recognition, formation mechanisms, and prediction using well log

Jin Lai et al.

Summary: This study utilizes core, thin section, conventional, and image log data to investigate the distribution of fractures in the fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the Permian Lucaogou Formation in Jimusar Sag. The results reveal the presence of tectonic inclined fractures, bedding parallel fractures, and abnormal high-pressure fractures. Bedding parallel fractures are abundant but mostly sealed by carbonate minerals and bitumen. These fractures lead to a rapid decrease in resistivity and can be identified on image logs. The distribution of fractures aligns with bedding planes and is influenced by the density of bedding planes. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing sweet spots, improving fracturing designs, and optimizing well spacing in fine-grained sedimentary rocks.

Multiscale characterization of shale pore-fracture system: Geological controls on gas transport and pore size classification in shale reservoirs

Yufei Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that although slippage pores dominate the total volumetric contribution in Longmaxi shale, with a clear presence of adsorption pores, overall gas transport in shale is mainly controlled by seepage pores (fracture-pores), which only constitute a very small portion of the total volume.

Controlling factors of lamellation fractures in marine shales: A case study of the Fuling Area in Eastern Sichuan Basin, China

Xiang Xu et al.

Summary: The characteristics and controlling factors of lamellation fractures in marine shales play a crucial role in the accumulation and preservation of shale gas. Organic matters, brittle minerals, laminae, and pyrite are found to be the main controlling factors affecting the development of lamellation fractures in the Paleozoic Wufeng Formation and Longmaxi Formation in the Fuling Area of Eastern Sichuan Basin.

Factors influencing the in-situ stress orientations in shales: A case study of the Wufeng-Longmaxi formations in the Jiaoshiba Area, southeastern Sichuan Basin, China

He Tian et al.

Summary: This study determined the SHmax orientation in the Jiaoshiba Area based on observations of drilling-induced fractures, and found that it is influenced by tectonic activity and rock mechanical properties. The SHmax orientation in the Jiaoshiba Area ranges widely from nearly EW to NEE-SWW. The deviation in SHmax orientation was caused by differences in rock mechanical properties due to intense tectonic movements, as well as lateral variations controlled by faults.
