Stochastic Mainshock-Aftershock Simulation and Its Applications in Dynamic Reliability of Structural Systems via DPIM

Rui Pang et al.

Summary: A novel approach for nonlinear stochastic dynamic analysis is proposed and illustrated with nonlinear building structures subjected to mainshock-aftershock sequences. The method includes establishing a stochastic seismic sequence model, choosing representative point sets of seismic parameters using generalized F-discrepancy, determining the correlation between mainshock and aftershock parameters using Copula theory, obtaining the stochastic dynamic response by solving the probability density integral equation, and obtaining the first-passage dynamic reliability using the direct probability integral method. The proposed method is compared to Monte Carlo simulation and probability density evolution method to demonstrate its correctness and efficiency. The influence of aftershocks on nonlinear structures is explained from the perspective of probability for the first time.

Stochastic dynamic response and seismic fragility analysis for high concrete face rockfill dams considering earthquake and parameter uncertainties

Kehao Chen et al.

Summary: This study generates three types of randomness (material parameter randomness, stochastic seismic excitation, and their coupling) using a stochastic ground motion model and generalized F-discrepancy (GF-discrepancy) method. The generalized probability density evolution method (GPDEM) is used to analyze the influence of randomness on the stochastic dynamic response and system reliability of high concrete face rockfill dams (CFRDs). A performance-based reliability evaluation framework is established based on the limit state of CFRD defined according to crest subsidence and face-slab stress. The results show that the randomness of ground motions dominates the stochastic dynamic response of the CFRD, and the proposed methods can obtain dynamic reliability at different safety thresholds. Moreover, the seismic safety evaluation framework provides significant guidance for designing and analyzing practical engineering projects.

Numerical analysis of buried pipelines response to bidirectional non-uniform seismic excitation

Zhike Guo et al.

Summary: The multi-directional and spatially variable earthquake motion is a major cause of pipeline damage during earthquakes. A comprehensive finite element model was established and validated to investigate the response of buried pipelines to different types of earthquake excitations. The results show that the strain response and axial force of the pipeline under bidirectional excitation are significantly larger than that under unidirectional excitation.

Seismic fragility analysis of suspended cable trays in civil buildings

Chen Wu et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the seismic fragility of typical suspended cable trays in civil buildings through full-scale shaking table tests and numerical simulation. By defining the damage states and establishing a finite element model verified by test results, the seismic fragility analysis of the cable tray is carried out using the incremental dynamic analysis method. The results show that the peak floor acceleration is more suitable as an intensity measure for the analysis, and seismic fragility curves are generated for two typical types of cable trays.

Seismic Intensity Measures and Fragility Analysis for Subway Stations Subjected to Near-fault Ground Motions with Velocity Pulses

Chengming Zhang et al.

Summary: The study aims to explore the optimal seismic intensity measures for subway stations under near-fault seismic excitations and establish seismic fragility curves based on these measures. Results show that for engineering sites of Classes I and II, sustained maximum acceleration followed by peak ground acceleration are the optimum IMs, while for engineering sites of Classes III and IV, velocity spectrum intensity is the optimum measure.

Longitudinal response of buried pipeline under non-uniform seismic excitation from multi-point shaking table tests

Junyan Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of non-uniform seismic excitation on pipeline response through a series of three-dimensional shaking table tests. Results showed that the pipeline experienced tensile and compressive strains due to longitudinal seismic excitation, with the strain response under non-uniform excitation being approximately twice that of uniform excitation. The interaction between soil and pipeline exhibited complex behavior, with sliding being more likely under non-uniform seismic excitation. The dynamic response of the pipeline-soil system is sensitive to non-uniform ground motion and should be properly considered in seismic pipeline design.

Shake Table Test on a Long-Span Cable-Stayed Bridge with Viscous Dampers Considering Wave Passage Effects

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: This study focused on the damping effectiveness of additional longitudinal viscous dampers employed for seismic control of long-span cable-stayed bridges considering wave passage effects. Test results showed that the damping effectiveness was significantly reduced under near-field ground motion, while positive damping effectiveness was commonly achieved under far-field ground motions considering the wave passage effect, with negative damping effectiveness observed under certain wave velocities in near-field ground motion.
