The dos and don'ts for predicting invasion dynamics with species distribution models

Cang Hui

Summary: Invasion dynamics are influenced by various factors and cannot be accurately predicted. Species Distribution Models (SDMs) have been used to assess invasion risk, but relying solely on SDMs may lead to biased conclusions. This Editorial calls for a more cautious approach in using SDMs for predicting invasion dynamics.

Predicting climatic threats to an endangered freshwater mussel in Europe: The need to account for fish hosts

Janine P. da Silva et al.

Summary: The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera is facing population declines in Europe, and the inclusion of fish hosts' occurrence data in species distribution models can improve predictions. Climate change poses a particular threat to the mussel-fish dynamics. The future distribution of M. margaritifera is expected to contract, with current protected areas failing to safeguard the species. This study highlights the importance of including biotic interactions, such as host species, in distribution models and informs conservation strategies.

Linking genetic structure, landscape genetics, and species distribution modeling for regional conservation of a threatened freshwater turtle

Eric M. McCluskey et al.

Summary: Regional conservation efforts should incorporate fine scale landscape genetic and habitat suitability data for management decisions. This study investigated the landscape determinants of gene flow and habitat suitability for the state-threatened Blanding's turtle in northeastern New York. The results showed that open water and cultivated land play important roles in gene flow and habitat selection for the turtles. By combining genetic and habitat information, more comprehensive landscape planning can be achieved.

Freshwater unionid mussels threatened by predation of Round Goby (Neogobius melanostomus)

Kyle H. Clark et al.

Summary: Freshwater mussels are crucial to riverine ecosystems, but their decline worldwide has raised concerns for conservation. This study reveals the invasive Round Goby's propensity to prey upon indigenous freshwater mussels, posing a growing threat to both common and endangered species. The introduction of Round Goby to North American freshwaters has significant implications for conservation and management.

White-tailed deer consumption of emergent macrophytes mediates aquatic-to-terrestrial nutrient flows

Jonathan W. Lopez et al.

Summary: This study investigates how emergent macrophytes and aquatic animal aggregations influence the flow of resources between streams and terrestrial habitats. The findings suggest that white-tailed deer play a significant role in transferring aquatic-derived nutrients into terrestrial ecosystems by consuming macrophytes and defecating on land. It remains unclear whether aquatic animal aggregations promote such resource flows, but the global distributions of deer and macrophytes indicate that cervid-driven aquatic-to-terrestrial nutrient flows may be widespread and ecologically important.

Limited Co- existence of Native Unionids and Invasive Dreissenid Mussels more than 30 Y Post Dreissenid Invasion in a Large River System

S. S. Keretz et al.

Summary: The survival of native freshwater mussels has raised serious concerns in the Laurentian Great Lakes region after the introduction of dreissenid mussels. Despite previous assumptions of extirpation from the Detroit River, live unionids were found during a comprehensive survey in 2019. The study suggests that, under the right conditions, co-existence between some species of unionids and dreissenids is possible in this large river system.
