Is football coming out? Anti-gay attitudes, social desirability, and pluralistic ignorance in amateur and professional football

Selectively liberal? social change and attitudes towards homosexual relations in the UK

Summary: This paper presents a model to explain why some individuals' liberal attitudes towards the LGBT population may be strategic rather than sincere. The study finds that the British population has become more tolerant of homosexuality compared to the late 1980s. However, this trend has slowed down in recent years, especially in areas with high levels of immigration, particularly from countries outside Europe. The authors attribute these changes to two effects of immigration/multiculturalism - direct cultural effects and indirect political effects - where adopting a liberal attitude towards the LGBT population may generate benefits for the in-group by creating disutility for culturally conservative religious minorities and immigrants.

Analyzing the Presence of Homosexually- Themed Language Among Association Football Fans in the United Kingdom

Summary: This article is based on an online survey conducted from March 2020 to April 2020, which collected the opinions of 2,663 association football fans regarding homosexually-themed language at men's professional football matches in the United Kingdom. The survey results indicate that while 95% of the supporters would support a gay player at their club, 41% have heard language that they consider malicious or toxic, while 37% believe it is not intentionally hostile and see it as playful and humorous banter. The article then addresses the paradox of football fans challenging accusations of homophobia while also acknowledging the presence of homosexually-themed language that promotes heteronormativity, regardless of how it is perceived by other fans.

Solid support or secret dissent? A list experiment on preference falsification during the Russian war against Ukraine1

Summary: This research note presents the results of a list experiment conducted during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which aimed to estimate the extent of preference falsification with regard to support for the war. The results show high levels of support for the war and significant levels of preference falsification, particularly among individuals relying on TV as their main source of news. The study also reveals that high levels of support for war can be sustained even once the brutality of the war has become clear.

Not Your Average Joe: Pluralistic Ignorance, Status, and Modern Sexism

Summary: Research has shown that men's gender-related behaviors and beliefs are influenced by what they perceive other men believe, with men tending to think other men are more sexist than themselves. Rejecting homosexuality but tolerating homosexuals: The complex relations between religiosity and opposition to homosexuality in 9 Arab countries

Summary: Research findings show that while most Arab Muslims reject homosexuality and homosexuals, one in five rejects homosexuality but does not object to having homosexual neighbors. Strong religious attachment increases opposition to homosexuality and homosexual individuals, but other dimensions of religiosity may reduce certain oppositions. Therefore, the argument that Arab Muslims' religiosity leads only to opposition to homosexuality is too simplistic.
