On securing continuity of eddy covariance flux time-series after changing the measurement height: Correction for flux differences due to the footprint difference

Minseok Kang et al.

Summary: During long-term flux monitoring, it is important to understand and correct for flux differences caused by changes in measurement settings. In this study, a comparison was made between fluxes measured at 10 m and 5 m heights at the CRK site. The results showed the existence of both random and systematic errors in the flux differences, with the primary cause of the systematic errors being footprint differences rather than turbulent transport differences.

Global benefits of non-continuous flooding to reduce greenhouse gases and irrigation water use without rice yield penalty

Yan Bo et al.

Summary: Non-continuous flooding is an effective method for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and irrigation water use in rice fields. The study found that the key factor influencing the effectiveness of non-continuous flooding is the ratio of days without standing water. This method can be adopted in 76% of global rice harvested areas, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving water without affecting rice yield.

Delayed sowing date improves the quality of mechanically transplanted rice by optimizing temperature conditions during growth season

Fei Deng et al.

Summary: Delayed sowing can improve the quality of mechanically transplanted rice, increasing amylose content and reducing protein content, chalk grain rate, and chalkiness degree. Temperature conditions before and after heading play a significant role in rice quality.

Searching for Win-Win solutions for food-water-GHG emissions tradeoffs across irrigation regimes of paddy rice in China

Zhan Tian et al.

Summary: Paddy rice cultivation in China is a significant source of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Water-saving irrigation technologies have been tested to increase the drainage period during the rice growth cycle to balance food security with environmental impacts. Computer simulations show that compared to traditional flooded rice fields, water-saving irrigation methods can significantly reduce methane emissions with minimal impact on rice yields.

Assessing the impacts of diversified crop rotation systems on yields and nitrous oxide emissions in Canada using the DNDC model

Rong Jiang et al.

Summary: Process-based models are effective in assessing the sustainability of agricultural productivity and environmental health. This study found that the DNDC model performed well in simulating yields of corn, oats, and alfalfa, but only fair to good in predicting N2O emissions from rotational oats and alfalfa crops. Diverse rotation systems have varying impacts on N2O emissions and corn yields, with COAA having the lowest emissions and highest yields.

Modeling organically fertilized flooded rice systems and its long-term effects on grain yield and methane emissions

Effects of Early- and Late-Sowing on Starch Accumulation and Associated Enzyme Activities During Grain Filling Stage in Rice

Wang Wenting et al.

Summary: The environmental temperature during the grain filling stage significantly affects starch synthesis and accumulation in rice. Early-sowing at high temperatures hindered starch synthesis and accumulation, whereas late-sowing at lower temperatures allowed starch synthesis and accumulation to return to normal levels.

Early sowing increases grain yield and cooking and eating quality of machine-transplanted rice in eastern China

Guohui Li et al.

Summary: In a rice-wheat double cropping system, early sowing can improve the utilization of temperature and light resources, crop growth characteristics, starch RVA spectrum characteristics, lower rice protein content, leading to increased biomass production, grain yield, and improved cooking and eating quality of machine-transplanted rice.

Can cropland management practices lower net greenhouse emissions without compromising yield?

Ziyin Shang et al.

Summary: Smart cropland management practices can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions while increasing crop yield, such as replacing synthetic nitrogen with organic fertilizer in rice paddies. However, intermittent irrigation may lead to increased emissions and decreased yield. Therefore, it is important to manage croplands carefully to sequester soil organic carbon, maintain yield, and control methane emissions effectively.
