Air/Water Interface Rheology Probed by Thermal Capillary Waves

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the interfacial rheology of air/water interfaces by studying the thermal capillary fluctuations of surfactant-loaded interfaces. Measurements of the power spectral density and damping of the thermal fluctuations were obtained, showing resonance peaks and a maximum damping at a specific concentration of surfactants, in agreement with the Levich model. This study demonstrates that AFM can be a powerful tool for probing the rheological properties of air/water interfaces.

Facile and Robust Production of Ultrastable Micrometer-Sized Foams

Mariana Rodriguez-Hakim et al.

Summary: Stable foams have important applications, but legislative initiatives restrict the use of surface active materials. This study presents an innovative foaming technology that produces ultrastable foams through particle densification. The foams, stabilized by aqueous nanosilica, have excellent mechanical resistance to maintain stability. These nanosilica foams are tested in concrete applications, showing improved freeze-thaw resistance and material strength. The stability criterion derived from interfacial rheological properties can be applied to other complex interfaces.

Salt effects on the dilational viscoelasticity of surfactant adsorption layers

Mahshid Firouzi et al.

Summary: The interfacial rheology of surfactant adsorbed layers plays a key role in the formation and stability of foams and emulsions, as well as providing insights into complex surfactant systems in various applications. The ongoing investigations focus on the presence of inorganic ions and their influence on the interfacial rheological properties despite having no surface activity. There is a need for further research on the ion-specific effect on interfacial viscoelasticity.

Numerical investigation of the effect of surface viscosity on droplet breakup and relaxation under axisymmetric extensional flow

Natasha Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of interfacial viscosity in the deformation and breakup of a single droplet in an extensional flow was investigated. It was found that surface shear and dilational viscosity are important factors for droplet stability, and the influence of surfactant transport was also discussed.

Use of a Geometric Parameter for Characterizing Rigid Films at Oil-Water Interfaces

Anthony Hutin et al.

Summary: Interfacial tension and dilatational rheology can be characterized using axisymmetric drop shape analysis (ADSA) for the mechanical response of a liquid interface. The Young-Laplace equation remains valid for systems dominated by surfactant adsorption/desorption, while its validity is questionable for interfaces dominated by extra stresses like particle monolayers or asphaltenes. The deviation of drop shape from purely Laplacian can be measured by the parameter RV/A, which indicates the deviation from a perfect sphere. The parameter RV/A varies depending on the interaction strength of molecules adsorbed at the interface, and can approach 2 in long-time-scale experiments.

Instrument for measurement of interfacial structure-property relationships with decoupled interfacial shear and dilatational flow: Quadrotrough

Y. Summer Tein et al.

Summary: Understanding the structure-property relationship of complex fluid-fluid interfaces is crucial for designing systems with targeted interfacial properties. This article presents a new instrument capable of controlled interfacial dilation and shear kinematics, combined with in situ microscopy and neutron reflectometry for detailed structural measurements of the interface at the mesoscale and nanoscale.

A miniaturized radial Langmuir trough for simultaneous dilatational deformation and interfacial microscopy

Shalaka K. Kale et al.

Summary: The study developed a miniaturized radial Langmuir trough to investigate the interfacial rheological properties of complex fluid-fluid interfaces, compared with a commercial rectangular Langmuir trough. By conducting in situ visualization in the radial trough, micrographs were used to obtain film properties for each material. This advance in colloid and interface science provides a new method to capture structure-property relationships of planar interfaces, which will contribute to the development of constitutive modeling of complex fluid-fluid interfaces.
