Investigation of Potential Drivers of Elevated Uranium Prevalence in Indian Groundwaters with a Unified Speciation Model

Surya Sujathan et al.

Summary: This study found that elevated uranium concentrations in Indian groundwater are primarily geogenic, but the specific mineralogical sources and mechanisms for uranium mobilization are poorly understood. A comprehensive speciation model was developed to predict uranium concentrations in groundwater, and it was found that uranium contamination is predominant in mixed oxic-anoxic aquifers with high concentrations of iron, manganese, and sulfate. The model provides a quantitative framework for understanding the dominant mobilization mechanisms of geogenic uranium in aquifers worldwide.

Coupled redox cycling of Fe and Mn in the environment: The complex interplay of solution species with Fe- and Mn-(oxyhydr)oxide crystallization and transformation

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: The chemistry of Fe and Mn in natural geochemical systems are closely coupled, and the coupled redox reactions between Fe and Mn play important roles in environmental system dynamics. The crystallization and transformation of FeOx and MnOx are bilaterally affected by the coupled redox between Fe and Mn. The coupled redox cycling of Fe and Mn exerts more complex and significant influences on biogeochemical processes compared to individual Fe or Mn.

Genesis of geogenic contaminated groundwater: As, F and I

Yanxin Wang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the hydrogeological features, main sources of geogenic hazardous substances, dominant hydrogeochemical processes, and key factors controlling the occurrence of high arsenic, high fluoride, and high iodine groundwater. Four basic genetic types of GCGs are proposed by summarizing the characteristics of the distribution and major hydrogeochemical processes.

Forms and mobility of heavy metals/metalloids in sewage-irrigated soils in the North China Plain

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: The study showed that sewage irrigation significantly increased heavy metal/metalloid contents associated with labile and bioavailable fractions in the SIS, and both the compost leachate and low pH solution should enhance the mobility of heavy metals/metalloids in the SIS and potentially contaminate groundwater.

Machine-Learning Predictions of High Arsenic and High Manganese at Drinking Water Depths of the Glacial Aquifer System, Northern Continental United States

Melinda L. Erickson et al.

Summary: The study successfully predicted high arsenic and manganese concentrations in groundwater in the glacial aquifer system in the northern United States using machine learning models. By analyzing groundwater age metrics, redox conditions, and pH, the models were able to determine a high likelihood of high As and high Mn in the central part of the GLAC.

The Role of Manganese Carbonate Precipitation in Controlling Fluoride and Uranium Mobilization in Groundwater

Ashwini Kumar Mohapatra et al.

Summary: Groundwater contamination with fluoride and uranium is a common issue in many parts of India, with limited understanding of their sources and mobilization mechanisms. The present study identified calcite precipitation-induced fluorite dissolution as a key factor contributing to the coexistence of elevated F and U in shallow groundwater, while elevated Mn in deeper groundwater may play a critical role in controlling F and U concentrations in the shallow aquifer.
