Anti-Asian American Hate Crimes Spike During the Early Stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Sungil Han et al.

Summary: The recent high-profile hate crimes in the U.S., particularly those targeting Asian Americans, have raised concerns about their vulnerability to victimization. While there has been descriptive evidence indicating a surge in anti-Asian American hate crime during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study found that the significant increase after March 16, 2020 was not sustained over the follow-up time period available for analysis.

Measures of emotion regulation: Convergence and psychometric properties of the difficulties in emotion regulation scale and emotion regulation questionnaire

Karolina Sorman et al.

Summary: The results suggest that DERS-16 could serve as an alternative, easily administered measure of emotion regulation difficulties, with strong associations between total scores of DERS-36 and DERS-16 and depression and anxiety, while the corresponding associations between ERQ subscales and psychiatric symptoms were weak.

Racial and ethnic differences in emotion regulation: A systematic review

Summary: This study summarizes existing literature on racial and ethnic differences in emotion regulation, finding that there are differences in emotion regulation strategies and potential between racial/ethnic groups, with ethnoracial minorities generally exhibiting greater use of emotion regulation strategies but also lower emotion regulation potential.

Regulation of positive and negative emotions across cultures: does culture moderate associations between emotion regulation and mental health?

Fabian Schunk et al.

Summary: The study found that across cultures, strategies such as distraction from negative emotions, savouring positive emotions, and reappraisal were related to better mental health, while distraction from positive emotions and ruminating on negative experiences were related to worse mental health; the link between rumination and lower well-being was weaker among Japanese; suppressing negative emotions out of empathic concern was associated with better mental health among the Japanese.

Gender Differences in Cardiac Chronotropic Control: Implications for Heart Rate Variability Research

DeWayne P. Williams et al.

Summary: The study investigates the moderating effect of gender on the association between HRV and indices of cardiac chronotropy, finding that gender significantly influences the relationship between HRV variables and both heart rate and inter-beat-intervals. While the results were not consistent when using adjusted HRV variables, the data suggest that gender is a crucial factor to consider in future HRV research.

Heart rate variability in the prediction of mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis of healthy and patient populations

Marc N. Jarczok et al.

Summary: This comprehensive meta-analysis examines the association between measures of heart rate variability (HRV) and the risk of disease and mortality. The results show that lower HRV parameter values are significant predictors of higher mortality across different populations and recording lengths. The analysis confirms a strong association between HRV and all-cause mortality. Additionally, a sub-analysis highlights that individuals with the lowest quartile of 5-minute root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) have a higher risk of mortality.

Vagally mediated heart rate variability, stress, and perceived social support: a focus on sex differences

Summary: The study found that higher heart rate variability (vmHRV) is closely related to higher perceived social support in females, especially under higher stress conditions. This is related to the evolutionary differences in stress management strategies between genders.

Gender Matters: Nonlinear Relationships Between Heart Rate Variability and Depression and Positive Affect

Derek P. Spangler et al.

Summary: This study found significant quadratic effects between resting vmHRV and reports of depression symptoms and positive affect in women but not in men. Specifically, the lowest levels of depression and the highest levels of positive affect were found at moderate vmHRV in women. These results suggest that gender differences need to be considered when examining the nonlinear associations of vmHRV.
