Dark fermentative hydrogen production: Potential of food waste as future energy needs

Gunda Mohanakrishna et al.

Summary: Globally, food waste is a major component in waste management and biohydrogen production from food waste is emerging as a sustainable and eco-friendly option. Food waste is highly biodegradable and rich in carbohydrates, and can be efficiently utilized by anaerobic bacteria. Pretreatment methods can improve the bioavailability of organics in food waste. Dark fermentation produces organic acids that can be integrated with secondary bioprocesses for energy generation and biochemicals production. Various parameters can be optimized to enhance the process efficiency of biohydrogen production. The application of solid-state fermentation in dark fermentation improves the process efficiency, making food waste a suitable substrate for circular economy and waste-based biorefinery.

Leonardo Sibono et al.

Summary: The enzymatic hydrolysis of dried brewers' spent grain without pretreatment was investigated. Enzymatic hydrolysis experiments were conducted using Cellic(R) CTec2 as the enzyme complex and the glucose yield was optimized with respect to temperature, solid loading, and enzyme loading. The optimized enzymatic hydrolysis yielded 11.71 ± 0.09 g(glucose) g(DM)(-1) at 48.6°C, 6.7% w/w biomass loading, and 0.22 mL g(DM)(-1) enzyme concentration, corresponding to 44% of the theoretical yield. The temporal profile of glucose concentration was modeled using Chrastil's model and a modified version, with the modified Chrastil's model providing more precise parameter estimation compared to the classical one.

Biovalorization of brewer's spent grain as single-cell protein through coupling organosolv pretreatment and fungal cultivation

Mohsen Parchami et al.

Summary: Brewer's spent grain (BSG), a byproduct from the food sector, can be valorized by organosolv pretreatment for the production of food- and feed-grade single-cell protein (SCP). Cultivating filamentous fungi A. oryzae on organosolv-treated BSG yielded more biomass and higher protein content compared to N. intermedia. Increasing substrate loading enhanced ethanol-to-substrate yield but decreased protein content. The concept of integrating organosolv pretreatment with fungal cultivation was proposed as a sustainable route for managing BSG and obtaining other valuable products.

Advances in downstream processes and applications of biological carboxylic acids derived from organic wastes

Chuang Chen et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent advances in recovery technologies of carboxylic acids and their applications, providing a reference for future study and industrial application. Integrated processes face the challenges of impurity removal from fermentation broth at the expense of loss and cost. Biological synthesis is a better option compared to chemical processes due to lower substrate requirements. The use of toxic agents, acid/alkaline consumption, and membrane fouling hinder the sustainability and scale-up of the downstream processes. Future research on novel solvents and materials is necessary to achieve sustainable recovery and cost reduction in the downstream processes.
