Associations of self-regulation strategy use with in-play betting intensity and associated harms: An ecological momentary assessment study

Who makes in-play bets? Investigating the demographics, psychological characteristics, and gambling-related harms of in-play sports bettors

Summary: Recent years have witnessed a significant increase in sports betting, particularly with the introduction of novel forms such as in-play betting. Existing evidence suggests that in-play betting may be more harmful compared to traditional and single-event betting. However, limited research has been conducted on in-play sports betting. This study aimed to explore the differences in demographic, psychological, and gambling-related factors between in-play sports bettors, single-event bettors, and traditional bettors. The findings revealed that in-play sports bettors exhibited higher problem gambling severity, endorsed greater gambling-related harms, and reported more mental health and substance use difficulties compared to single-event and traditional bettors. There were generally no significant differences between single-event and traditional bettors. These results provide empirical support for the potential harms associated with in-play sports betting and contribute to our understanding of the population at risk for increased harms in relation to in-play betting. The findings may have important implications for the development of public health and responsible gambling initiatives, especially in jurisdictions where sports betting is being legalized.

Therefore, further research in this area is crucial to promote appropriate policies and more ethical product design.

Dispositional and Contextual Correlates of In-Play Sports Betting and Related Harms: A 2-Week Ecological Momentary Assessment Study

Summary: This study examined the dispositional and contextual correlates of in-play sports betting and related harms. The results showed that individuals who used substances, had an interest in sports, or placed in-play bets to be in the game were more likely to experience financial and relationship harms. Responsible gambling initiatives targeting contextual risk factors, such as substance use while in-play betting, may help to reduce the intensity of in-play betting and its associated harms.
