Titanium Dioxide as the Most Used Photocatalyst for Water Purification: An Overview

Summary: This paper analyzes the principles and mechanisms of the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as an excellent material for environmental applications. The structural and physical specificities of TiO2 nanoparticles, such as morphology, crystal structure, and electronic and optical properties, have been considered in the context of photocatalytic applications. The influence of factors such as the type and dimensions of photocatalyst particles, solution pH, oxidants/electron acceptors, and light intensity on the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 is discussed. Additionally, the superhydrophilicity of the TiO2 surface and methods for improving photocatalytic properties through aggregation and agglomeration are explored.

Modulation of Bronsted and Lewis Acid Centers for NixCo3-xO4 Spinel Catalysts: Towards Efficient Catalytic Conversion of Lignin

Summary: This paper presents a new strategy to tune the active sites of catalysts for the selective cleavage of lignin to produce aromatic monomers. The authors achieved this by adjusting the non-stoichiometric ratio of nickel and cobalt. The optimized Ni0.2Co2.8O4 catalysts showed outstanding catalytic conversion and selectivity for lignin cleavage.

The Lewis acid sites trap photo-generated electrons and promote the O-2 reduction process through charge imbalance. Additionally, oxygen defects near Lewis acid sites facilitate the adsorption, activation, and oxidation of water molecules. The photo-redox reaction occurs simultaneously around the Lewis acid sites, driving the photocarriers' transmission and separation.

Photocatalytic properties of SnO2/MoO3 mixed oxides and their relation to the electronic properties and surface acidity

Summary: The wet impregnation method was used to synthesize SnO2/MoO3 heterojunctions with different amounts of Mo. The presence of MoO3 as a acidity modulator influenced the photocatalytic performance, highlighting the importance of proper synthesis of these materials. Physical mixture of SnO2+MoO3 showed lower performance values compared to the heterojunction SnO2/MoO3, indicating the significance of synthetic method in photocatalytic studies.
