Admixture of Holothurian Species in the Hellenic Seas (Eastern Mediterranean) as Revealed by RADseq

Georgios A. Gkafas et al.

Summary: By analyzing RAD sequencing data, this study found strong evidence of admixture between two congeneric holothurians, Holothuria (Holothuria) tubulosa and Holothuria (Roweothuria) poli, living in sympatry in the Hellenic Seas. The populations of the two species diverged around 13.5 thousand years ago, just after the Last Glacial Maximum, indicating a role for admixture upon secondary contact and supporting the recent suggestion that the genomic underpinning of ecological speciation often has an older, allopatric origin.

Analysis of Complete Mitochondrial Genome of Bohadschia argus (Jaeger, 1833) (Aspidochirotida, Holothuriidae)

Bo Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Bohadschia argus was obtained through high-throughput sequencing. The genome was 15,656 bp in length and contained a putative control region and 37 typical genes found in animal mitochondrial genomes. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that B. argus belongs to the Holothuriidae family and is closely related to members of Actinopyga and Holothuria. The findings provide important information for understanding the genetic characteristics and evolutionary relationships of B. argus.

New insights upon the reproductive biology of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea) in the Mediterranean: Implications for management and domestication

Viviana Pasquini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the basic life-history traits of Holothuria tubulosa in the Central-Western Mediterranean (Sardinia, Italy), including population structure and reproductive cycle. The findings provide new evidence on the biological and ecological features of the species, essential for scientifically-based stock assessment and conservation management.
