Nano formulation approaches for curcumin delivery- a review

Kumararaja Gayathri et al.

Summary: Curcumin, derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa Linn, has been extensively studied for its potential in treating various diseases. However, its inadequate intake and low aqueous solubility have posed challenges. To overcome these challenges, nanotechnology has been used to improve the absorption, solubility, and bioavailability of curcumin. Nano formulations of curcumin have shown promise in overcoming the limitations of traditional curcumin-based medications.

The bioavailability, metabolism and microbial modulation of curcumin-loaded nanodelivery systems

Ruxin Chang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the applications of curcumin, the major active component in turmeric, in food industry, which is restricted by low solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Recent strategies using nanocarriers such as complex coacervates, nanocapsules, liposomes, and nanoparticles have been developed to overcome these limitations. The review focuses on delivery systems responsive to environmental stimuli, metabolites and biodistribution of curcumin, interaction with gut micro biota, and the feasibility of applying curcumin nanocarriers in food industry.

Green Synthesis and the Evaluation of a Functional Amphiphilic Block Copolymer as a Micellar Curcumin Delivery System

Radostina Kalinova et al.

Summary: Polymer micelles are versatile drug delivery systems with design flexibility. In this study, an environmentally safe solvent-free synthetic procedure was used to prepare an amphiphilic diblock copolymer, which self-assembled into stable micelles in aqueous media. The micelles had an average diameter of 44 nm and were loaded with curcumin, a plant-derived anticancer drug. Preliminary in vitro evaluations showed that the functional copolymer micelles were non-toxic and promising for further investigation as nanocarriers in biomedical applications.
